Churches and Art Spanning Many Centuries

The Ecclesia di Sant’Ugo takes you far back into history. The Romanesque building is dated to around 900 AD. Inside are three fresco cycles from different periods: the first was created in 1299, the second dates from around the middle of the 14th century, and the third from the 16th century. This chronological layering makes the church an especially vivid place for anyone who would like to appreciate religious art beyond the perspective of a single style.

The Chiesa di San Francesco was built outside the city walls in 1245. After collapsing in 1586, it was rebuilt after 1603. Its 14th-century portal bears the coat of arms of Sixtus V. This place of worship therefore brings together several historical layers: its early foundation, the interruption caused by the collapse and its later architectural development.

The Chiesa di San Serafino focuses on a Capuchin friar born in Montegranaro. He was born in Montegranaro in 1540, and the church is dedicated to him. Its furnishings include wooden altars decorated with altarpieces. One of them features Saint Lawrence by Nicola Monti; the patron saints of shoemakers, Crispin and Crispinian, are also depicted.

Santi Filippo e Giacomo has both a long history of foundation and significant works of art. The church was founded by Farfa long ago; in 1539, the poet and writer Annibal Caro was its lay prior. Its present form dates from 1760. It houses a Madonna with Saint Philip and Saint James by Federico Barocci, as well as a 15th-century sandstone Pietà with German influences.

The Cine-teatro La Perla is a venue for film screenings. In addition, it offers an important theater season in winter, as well as a popular theater series for children.
