Monterubbiano combines historic buildings, cultural institutions, outdoor routes and firmly rooted local traditions. Those looking for a place with varied experiences for a trip to Italy will find points of interest here ranging from architecture and archaeology to events and views of the landscape.
Culture and Architectural Heritage
The Polo culturale San Francesco is a multifunctional facility with an auditorium, a historical and archaeological museum, a library, an exhibition space, an environmental education center and a botanical garden. The Palazzo Comunale is also one of the town’s defining buildings. Constructed in the 14th century, the building features Romanesque-Gothic forms. To visit the Palazzo Comunale with the Quadreria and the Museo delle bambole da tutto il mondo, it is necessary to contact the municipal tourist office.
The Teatro Pagani has a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with three tiers of boxes and a total of 180 seats. The Chiesa dei Ss. Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista provides an older sacred landmark: it was built in 1238 and contains remarkable frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The remains of the old fortifications include Porta del Pero, Porta Sant’Andrea and several surviving sections of wall.
The Palazzo Secreti is a building dating from the 17th to 18th century, constructed over the remains of the Cassero of the Sforza castle. The Museo Civico Archeologico offers another way to explore the town’s history. Its visitor route begins with a model of the area showing the course of the Aso River from the Monti Sibillini to the sea. The Ghetto Ebraico, known as “Le Spiagge,” dates from the 15th century.
Routes, Garden and Cloister
Many activities of the Centro di Educazione Ambientale take place outdoors, away from the new site near the San Francesco monastery and cloister, along an extensive network of paths. The newest section runs alongside the castle walls. As a result, walking and exploration are just as much a part of the townscape as the museums and historic buildings.
The San Francesco cloister has a central fountain and a walnut tree at its center. On the eastern side of the town lies the neoclassical public garden “Giacomo Leopardi.” It offers a beautiful panoramic view. These different places leave room in your plans for culture, time outdoors and quiet observation, without requiring the same type of visit for each.
Festivals and Local Traditions
On Whit Sunday, the historical re-enactment “Sciò la Pica” comes to life in Monterubbiano. Its highlight is the ring-jousting competition on Sunday afternoon. Another aspect of the local festival calendar is the fried tagliatelle festival, which usually takes place during the first week of August. It includes traditional games, performances and the eating of fried tagliatelle.
