Discover Massa: Loop Trail, Nature and Art

The “Anello del Potenza Pioraco, Massa, Pioraco” loop trail includes Massa in its route. It also features picnic areas, riverbanks, artworks and historic sites. This gives you several themes for planning a trip centred on Massa: exercise, breaks in the open air and cultural discoveries. In Fiuminata, a typical sweet, a parish church and a historic water source also reflect the character of the region.

Loop trail between bridges and riverbanks

The loop trail is 9.2 km long and has 100 m of elevation gain. These two figures give you a clear basis for planning your day. Along the loop trail, the route reaches Massa at the roadside at the beginning of the fifth bridge. It then follows the left riverbank back to the wooden bridge. Planned breaks by the river can therefore be incorporated into the same part of the day as the ascent and the length of the loop trail.

Picnic areas and nature experiences

The Fonte del Piscio picnic area lies at the foot of Colle Corno at an altitude of about 1,000 m, near a beech forest. Its facilities include barbecue areas, a large fountain and large tables. At Colle Corno, you can therefore plan a break on site using the available facilities.

Parco Adamo Grilli has accessible paths suitable for people with reduced mobility, families with pushchairs and older visitors. The park also contains the Stoni, small spring ponds that provide a habitat for numerous plant and animal species. Green spaces with large wooden tables make outdoor picnics possible. The Stoni are located in the same park area as the accessible paths and the green spaces with wooden tables.

Church, art and historic water supply

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta stands in the upper part of Fiuminata; from there, the town extends downhill towards the plain below. The paintings in Santa Maria Assunta were created around the mid-1920s in collaboration between Emilio Lazzari and Corrado Pellini. For visitors interested in culture, this site combines the town’s location with a specific art-historical testimony.

The large hall of Palazzo Lori houses the Deposito Beni Culturali Diotallevi di Angeluccio. It preserves numerous artworks from the churches of the town and the surrounding area. The preserved works include two paintings of the Madonna del Rosario: one from the 16th century from the parish church of Poggio Sorifa, and one from the 18th century from the parish church of S. Cassiano.

The Fontana Storica di Fiuminata served as the main water supply point for the entire community.
