Corridonia Between Route and Town History

The Route Maestria leads through workshops, churches, squares and local businesses in Corridonia. In doing so, it brings together different facets of the town: craftsmanship, sacred architecture, public spaces and local everyday culture.

The Abbazia di San Claudio lies in the Chienti Valley. In Corridonia itself, Piazza Filippo Corridoni is a rare example of rationalist architecture in the Marche region. The Pinacoteca Comunale displays a collection of figurative art from the 15th to the 19th century, most of which comes from local churches that were secularized after Italian unification.

Filippo Corridoni is associated with a specific biographical site. The Casa Natale di Filippo Corridoni is the house where Filippo Corridoni was born on August 19, 1887. Today, this birthplace houses the museum dedicated to him.

Churches, Monasteries and Town Gates

The Zoccolanti complex, comprising the former monastery of the Frati minori dell’Osservanza and the adjoining Madonna dei Monti church, stands on a hill 300 meters from Corridonia town center. The Zoccolanti complex includes a cloister and a 16th-century church and was built in 1510.

Further sacred and architectural traces span various periods. Santa Maria del Paradiso was built in 1480 on the site of an older devotional image. Porta San Donato dates from 1252 and combines a pointed arch with Baroque elements from the 17th century. The present monumental structure of Porta Romana was built in 1790 to a design by Giuseppe Valadier. Porta Trento was completely rebuilt in 1811 by the architect Antonio Mollari.

The Infiorata di Corridonia also adds its own distinctive touch to the town’s annual calendar. It takes place every June along a 2,000-meter route decorated with flowers, leaves and plant materials.

Rural Heritage and Regional Destinations

Corridonia’s rural heritage includes the atterrato di Via Zegalara. It is regarded as a preserved example of a bioecological rural dwelling and as evidence of the history of peasant civilization. In Corridonia, the atterrato di Via Zegalara is also the only example of this local rural house typology.

The Chiesa di San Claudio al Chienti houses some Roman finds discovered in the surrounding archaeological area. The surrounding area also includes the Museo Tipologico del Presepe, a museum; the Palazzo Compagnoni Marefoschi, a palace; the Museum of Natural History, a museum; the Museo della Carrozza, a museum; and the Giardini Diaz, a garden complex.

The wider regional area is home to Spiaggia di Fontespina and Spiaggia di Portocivitanova, both beaches. Acquarium - Porto S. Elpidio, a zoo, is also located in this wider regional area.
