Discover Pievebovigliana: History, Nature and Trails

Pievebovigliana combines a historic settlement with nature experiences in the surroundings of the Monti Sibillini. The town lies partly within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini and preserves its intact medieval urban layout with picturesque streets and stairways. This creates a varied mix of culture, landscapes and walks for your travel plans.

Churches, museums and medieval traces

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta and its Romanesque crypt have medieval origins, as indicated by the crypt and an inscription dated 1162. The Chiesa di San Giusto was built between the 11th and 12th centuries on a hill overlooking the valley below. Its circular layout with four apses and a dome also makes it architecturally noteworthy. The church also preserves frescoes from the late 14th century and historic paintings, including a work by Venanzo da Camerino.

Several museums round out the historical picture. The Museo Civico “Raffaele Campelli” was founded in 1936 to preserve and promote the history and art of the municipal area. The Pievebovigliana-Museo presents the social and artistic history of the area from prehistoric times to the present day. Casa Carradori preserves paintings from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Chiesa del Rosario preserves a fresco featuring a large 17th-century crucifix, as well as a painting by Luigi Valeri dated to around 1765, which is considered one of his final works.

Historic sites and local tradition

The Castello di Beldiletto was built by Giovanni da Varano in the 14th century and transformed into a Renaissance villa in the 15th century. The Chiesa e Convento di San Francesco dates back to the 14th century. Another chapter in the town’s history is represented by the Gualchiera Tintoria Cianni: this historic water-powered fulling and dyeing works processed and dyed wool and hemp fabrics. The original facility dates back to the 17th century, while the works opened in the first half of the 19th century.

Craftsmanship and regional food and drink traditions are also part of Pievebovigliana’s character. In 1942, Maria Ciccotti opened a craft workshop here with an attached school. Distilleria Varnelli was founded in 1868 and continues to operate as the oldest active liqueur producer in the Marche.

Lakes, gardens and landscapes

Lago di Boccafornace is an artificial lake fed by an intermittently flowing karst spring. During dry periods, a natural cave beside the lake can be visited; in winter, when the water level is suitable, the karst water siphon can be observed. A circular route of around 2 km follows the shore and includes an artistic installation with inscribed stones.

The Giardino delle Api features 54 plant species selected to attract bees and offers an educational trail about beekeeping and environmental protection. In the wider surroundings of Pievebovigliana, the Oasi naturalistica Lago di Polverina protects 241 hectares between Camerino, Fiastra and Valfornace; it includes a lake, river and agricultural landscape.

Trails for different excursion plans

The Sentiero Natura N2 in the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini is classified as a tourist trail (T), is 4–6 km long and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. It starts and ends in Isola di Pievebovigliana or Roccamaia and has an elevation difference of 323 metres. Chestnut woods and wheat fields shape its route, while the trail also conveys the area’s historic agricultural practices.

The 7.8 km circular route “Tra storia e cultura” focuses particularly on Pievebovigliana. In the wider area, the Asinovia hiking trail can be explored with donkeys; it starts at Peschiera in the municipality of Valfornace. Piazza Vittorio Veneto also has an e-bike station with charging, tyre-inflation and facilities for minor repairs. The tree-lined Parco Girolamo Varnelli, with benches and a central fountain, lies where Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via Roma meet. A footbridge dedicated to Maria Cortesi connects the park with the Giardino delle Api.
