Culture, History and Special Collections

The MIUMOR – Museo Internazionale dell’Umorismo nell’Arte is dedicated to humorous art and caricature. It preserves more than 4,000 original works, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, prints and engravings. The collection therefore appeals to anyone who would like to discover art from an unusual, pointed perspective as well.

The Museo Civico Archeologico di Tolentino preserves finds from the Picene culture and archaeological evidence from Roman times associated with ancient Tolentinum. The museum was founded in 1882 and is one of the earliest museums in the Marche. This gives visitors interested in history direct access to several periods of the local past.

The Museo del Santuario di San Nicola is spread across eight rooms and displays works of art as well as art handicrafts from various periods, from the 4th or 5th century to the 20th century. The Torre degli Orologi has four clock faces: one shows the phases of the moon, one Italian hours, one astronomical time and one the calendar. Together, the two sites make different forms of religious, technical and artistic heritage visible.

Castle History, Theatre and Archaeology

The Castello della Rancia has more than 700 years of history and houses the Museo Archeologico Aristide Gentiloni Silverj. The Teatro Vaccaj provides a different cultural focus: it was completed in 1795 and opened on 10 September 1797 under the name Teatro dell’Aquila. Today, the Teatro Vaccaj hosts Tolentino’s municipal theatre season, various music series, performances and other events throughout the year.

The exhibition “Attorno al fuoco 10.000 anni fa” includes, among other things, a simulated archaeological excavation, reproductions of Mesolithic works of art, and the production of prehistoric tools and weapons by flint knapping. In addition, the Mesolithic site discovered in Contrada Pace in Tolentino is so far considered the only site in the Marche that can be dated to this prehistoric period. Those interested in prehistory will find both an illustrative exhibition and a specific archaeological connection here.

Nature and Orientation

A nature oasis has been created below the Ponte del Diavolo. La Selva is a largely untouched forest covering more than 100 hectares, which the Marche region has designated as a protected area of botanical interest. These two natural attractions complement the museums and historic buildings with a focus on the landscape.

The Poltrona Frau Museum opened in 2012 and preserves original materials and documents relating to the company’s history and development. For orientation along the Via Lauretana, the route is signposted in both directions with dedicated waymarkers. In Tolentino, corporate history, regional archaeology, art and a clearly marked route thus stand side by side.
