Oratino: Art, History and Landscape in Molise

Oratino reveals itself through three strong themes: the wide-ranging views, its historic buildings and traditions with set dates. From the Belvedere Calise, a panoramic terrace, the view stretches from the Matese Massif to the Maiella Mountains. You can reach the viewpoint via the stone staircase of Pie’ di Castello. This means that discovering the town begins with a clear landscape theme, before churches, gates, palaces and local traditions provide further focal points.

Landscape between the forest and the Biferno

The natural landscape includes the wooded area of Oratino, which slopes down towards the Biferno River and is part of the Sites of Community Importance (SCIs). Near the Biferno is also the prehistoric Morgia “La Rocca”, a Bronze Age archaeological site. It belongs to the Parco delle Morge Cenozoiche del Molise. The municipality of Oratino has joined the Parco Regionale delle Morge; this is based on the area’s distinctive natural and historical values, which are intended to be protected. For planning purposes, Oratino can therefore be explored through both nature and history.

Historic centre and architecture

In the historic centre, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta stands at the highest point; it is mentioned in a document from 1241. Porta del Piano is a well-preserved 13th-century gate leading to the medieval Borgo of Oratino. Palazzo Ducale was renovated at the beginning of the 18th century by the poet and duke Gennaro Girolamo Giordano.

The Church of Santa Maria di Loreto also has a special connection to the town’s history: the Giordano dukes’ family chose it as a burial place. The decorative ensemble “trasporto della Santa Casa a Loreto” by Ciriaco and Stanislao Brunetti from the 18th century centrally depicts the Madonna and Child on the Santa Casa, carried over the sea by angels. Oratino’s stone-carving tradition has its roots in the 16th century and continues today through the work of a small number of craftspeople.

Museum and contemporary art

Since 2016, the Museo Domestico has existed as a permanent exhibition in the homes of Oratino’s residents. The works displayed there were donated by around twenty contemporary artists. Festivals with set dates

La Faglia takes place on 24 December. A candle made of reeds and measuring around 13 metres in length is carried from the entrance to the town to the forecourt of the church, where it is erected and lit. When it is made, two “Partiell”, or beaters, two spreaders, two pincers and a ratchet are used to pound the reeds. During the Infiorata on Corpus Christi, residents create floral carpets that decorate the procession and the streets of the medieval Borgo of Oratino. Le Lessate takes place on 17 January with a large fire in front of the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto and the distribution of a dish made from legumes and grains.
