Discover Terruggia: Church, Wine Tradition and Hiking Trail

Terruggia can be explored through several clearly distinct facets: sacred architecture in the town centre, a rural wine tradition, a theatre with distinctive features, a public park and a hiking trail through fields, meadows and vineyards. This gives the town something to offer culture enthusiasts as well as travellers who want to combine their stay with walks and regional history.

Church and Theatre in the Town Centre

The Chiesa di San Martino stands in the town centre of Terruggia, opposite the town hall. It is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours and the Nativity of Mary. Construction began in 1574, and the church was consecrated on 26 June 1601. Both the central location and the church’s long construction history are therefore important for understanding the townscape.

Another cultural venue is Teatro Le Muse. The vaulted hall features floral decorations and panels depicting the Muses and Greek deities. It also contains a restored old film projector. Teatro Le Muse holds a theatre season every year from October to April.

Infernot and Parks

The Municipal Infernot has a circular floor plan and is crafted from sandy sandstone with visible sedimentation bands. The Infernot del Municipio is an example of spontaneous art from Terruggia’s rural tradition. It was created towards the end of the 19th century to store wine bottles and is one of the few Infernot sites in public ownership. Those interested in the connection between everyday history, materials and winegrowing will find several specific points of interest here.

The Parco di Villa Poggio contributes to the town’s green character. The public park contains centuries-old trees. Villa Poggio was donated to the municipality of Terruggia in 1938. The park and villa therefore represent another aspect of the town, distinct from the church, theatre and Infernot.

Hiking Trail and Torre Veglio

Hiking Trail 736, “I Campi e i Prati Intorno a Terruggia”, begins near Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II by the town hall. It leads across fields and meadows and through vineyards before reaching Torre Veglio. Torre Veglio is a round 19th-century tower on the hill at the boundary between Terruggia and Rosignano. It is privately owned, not accessible to visitors and can only be viewed from the outside. For your planning, it is therefore important to consider the tower an external waypoint rather than an accessible destination inside.

Local Orientation and Travel Planning

There is a bus stop with a shelter on Via Roma near the Chiesa di San Grato. A local bus route connects Casale Monferrato with Terruggia, Rosignano, Frassinello, Ottiglio, Grazzano and Moncalvo. If you stay overnight in Terruggia, you can include these bus connections, the cultural sites and the starting point of Hiking Trail 736 in your personal travel planning.
