Pietra Marazzi: Natural Environment and Sacred History

One of the area’s central natural environments is the Garzaia di Pietra Marazzi. It is a Site of Regional Importance (SIR) and a 46-hectare biotope in Pietra Marazzi. The area is an inaccessible riparian woodland, or lowland forest. Precisely for this reason, it is protected from human disturbance and has preserved its distinctive character.

The Garzaia is home to significant colonies of grey herons. The area is also visited by numerous noteworthy bird species. If you are interested in landscapes, wetlands and wildlife, this natural environment forms an important thematic focus of Pietra Marazzi. Its special appeal lies not in a staged attraction, but in the combination of woodland landscape and birdlife.

Oratories and Chapels with a Long History

The Oratorio di San Bernardo dates from the 11th to the 12th century. The Confraternita dei Disciplinanti e Oratorio di S. Bernardo Abate is located next to the parish church of San Martino. In 2009–10, structural reinforcement work as well as complete restoration and extraordinary maintenance were carried out at the Oratorio di San Bernardo. These buildings give the sacred side of Pietra Marazzi specific names and places.

Another important stop is the Chiesa campestre di San Defendente. It was first mentioned in a document from 1536 and is the only chapel still standing today in the area of Pietra Marazzi. Several restoration phases bear witness to its long construction history: it was restored and decorated in 1602–1604, then again in 1933 and in the 1990s.

The Roman past is also part of the area’s historical character. Several Roman tombs were discovered in the hamlet of Santa Cristina, near the cemetery of Pietra Marazzi. Together with the sacred buildings, they create a timeline spanning from the Roman era through the Middle Ages to the more recent history of restoration.

The Museo Etnografico della Gambarina and the Giardino Botanico are located in the immediate vicinity of Pietra Marazzi.
