Carrosio: Geology, History and Paths through the Landscape

Carrosio offers several distinct ways to explore its landscape, geology and history. The town lies on the Via della Bocchetta, an ancient trade route between Genoa and the Po Valley. This makes it a destination where historical orientation and geological features come together through a range of different visitor experiences.

Hiking with a geological focus

If you would like to explore Carrosio on foot, the Sentiero del Geosito starts from Carrosio along hiking trail 490 and then switches to variant 490A. The route leads to a GSSP (Global Stratigraphic Section and Point). At such a rock outcrop, a boundary between two geological ages can be precisely determined and dated. The Geosito di Carrosio also gives you the opportunity to walk among rocks belonging to ancient underwater volcanoes.

The term GSSP therefore does not simply refer to any point in the landscape, but to a precisely defined geological reference. Together with the rocks of the Geosite, this creates a clear focus for anyone who wants not only to observe the landscape but also to understand its geological history. The route combines this scientifically distinctive subject matter with a specific trail via routes 490 and 490A.

Digital orientation and local highlights

For orientation on site, the official app “Carrosio – Torrente di Natura e Cultura” offers an interactive and immersive route that guides visitors in discovering the town, its surrounding area and its geological features. It allows local history, landscape and geology to be viewed from a shared exploration perspective. At the inauguration of the official app on 28 June 2026, the integrated map guided participants to the route’s first sculpture, the “pesce tondo”, which they unlocked there.

Churches, chapels and Genoese architectural history

The Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta was first mentioned in 1212; its present structure was built between 1675 and 1729. The Cappelletta di Nostra Signora della Misericordia is considered the oldest religious building in Carrosio preserved in its original form; it was built around 1630. The Palazzo Migliorati Gavotti was built by the Spinola family in the Genoese style at the end of the 16th century. The town’s architectural history therefore extends from the church’s first mention in 1212, through the construction of the chapel around 1630, to the present structure of the Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta between 1675 and 1729.

Festivals with religious and culinary traditions

The festivals also give Carrosio its own cultural rhythm. The Feast of the Assumption is celebrated in Carrosio on the sixth Sunday after Easter with a procession to Colle d’Aimero. The Sagra della Zucca also takes place every year; it includes market exhibitions, food tastings and competitions to recognize the best pumpkins.

Evening events and additional routes

For an astronomical perspective, the Osservatorio Astronomico di Carrosio is used during public openings for events, astronomical evenings and night hikes. The observatory thus represents an evening way to experience Carrosio, while the trails open up the town through geology and landscape. Another route leads from Carrosio via the Pineta del Bruzeta and Cascina Carpenè to Colle Zuccaro and back.
