Castle history in the heart of town

San Cristoforo combines a walled castle complex with a landscape to be explored along paths and on excursions. The castle complex is located in the centre of San Cristoforo, making it a prominent historical landmark for finding your way around the town.

The Torre del Gazzolo is particularly distinctive. The polygonal tower has an irregular ground plan, is of Lombard origin and was probably built between the 10th and 11th centuries to defend against the Saracens. Towards the end of the 14th century, the castle was established around this tower on the initiative of Opizzino Spinola. This architectural complex makes it possible to trace the development of the town through several historical periods.

The castle complex also includes the parish church of San Cristoforo. It dates back to the 15th century and was extended and remodelled in the 19th century. Another historic site is the ancient Pieve del “Lemmo e dei SS. Giacomo e Cristoforo”, which was once a shared place of worship for the inhabitants of San Cristoforo and Gavi. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata was also built around 1700 near the town’s ancient walls; it was used for celebrations to bless the fields and animals.

Those wishing to include the castle complex in their itinerary should take its limited accessibility into account. Access is restricted because it is privately owned and has numerous stairways.

Cave, memorials and paths in Val Lemme

Another point of interest is the Grotta dei Partigiani near Monte Paganone in San Cristoforo, in the direction of Parodi Ligure. The Grotta is a natural limestone cave. There, the municipalities of San Cristoforo and Parodi Ligure installed two memorial plaques commemorating those who fell in this war.

For active days, the Sentiero della Val Lemme offers a clearly defined stage: the San Cristoforo–Monte Erbano route is 9.9 km long, takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, and is marked with trail marker 290. The Sentiero della Val Lemme can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. This allows visitors to adapt their choice of activity to their preferred mode of transport without losing sight of the town’s historic sites in their travel plans.

Handmade Agnolotti

The local cuisine is also associated with its own event. The focus of the Sagra “Anlötì Föci a Man” is agnolotti prepared by hand according to an old traditional recipe. At a three-day festival in San Cristoforo, “foci a man” agnolotti were served with sauce, along with other dishes. Those interested in regional food culture will find this a special culinary connection to San Cristoforo.
