Moncalvo is situated on a hill above the valley. The compact historic settlement is surrounded by town walls and towers. The hilltop location thus shapes both the enclosed townscape and the views over the Piedmontese landscape.

Art and Historic Spaces

At the Museo Civico di Moncalvo, you can see the collection donated to the city by the ambassador Franco Montanari, who was born in Moncalvo. It comprises 20th-century paintings as well as African and Japanese art. The museum is accessible and open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00. The museum visit can therefore serve as a dedicated art appointment alongside San Francesco and the Teatro civico. The weekend opening hours provide this visit with a clear time frame.

The Romanesque church of San Francesco houses Caccia’s tomb, the graves of several members of the House of Monferrato, and numerous important paintings by Guglielmo Caccia and his daughter. Another architectural testimony is the Casa dei Monferrato, a notable example of 15th-century civil architecture with beautiful terracotta decorations. The terracotta decorations give the Casa dei Monferrato its own architectural accent.

Stage, Dance and Local Orientation

The Teatro civico “G. Montanari” was built in 1878 and is one of Piedmont’s historic theatres. Throughout the year, it hosts a series of dialect theatre performances as well as drama, music and dance events. The year of construction anchors the venue in the city’s history, while the programme brings together several forms of stage performance. The tourist office of the municipality of Moncalvo is located in the Teatro Civico di Moncalvo.

At Orsolina28, The Eye can host dance classes in other disciplines as well as performances and shows. Orsolina28’s Scuola28 promotes dance and related disciplines as an art form and as a means of well-being. The municipal Piscina Comunale Le Vallette was open to the public daily from 10:00 to 19:00 as of 31 May 2026. Alongside the historic theatre, dance in Moncalvo thus appears both as a performance and as a subject of instruction.

Wine, Specialties and Markets

Moncalvo is associated with the wines Barbera d’Asti DOCG, Barbera del Monferrato DOC and Grignolino d’Asti DOC. The culinary profile also includes Bue Grasso, white truffles, agnolotti, cured meats, goat’s cheese, Grissie, grissini and local sweet specialities. Moncalvo therefore also offers a comprehensible culinary focus for your travel planning.

The 388th National Fiera del Bue Grasso and Sagra del Bollito will take place in Moncalvo on Wednesday, 2 December 2026. The event is regarded as an annual tradition dating back centuries. On the last two Sundays of October, a large food market and a market for local handicrafts centred around white truffles take place in Piazza Carlo Alberto and Piazza Garibaldi. The December date and the two October Sundays distribute the market activity across different times of the year.
