Discover Carrù: History, Art and Langhe Panorama

Carrù brings together, within a small area, different traces of Piedmontese history: a castle documented since the Middle Ages, Romanesque chapels, the Einaudi House, works of art and views over the Langhe.

Historical Sites in Carrù and the Surrounding Area

The oldest reliable document found to date concerning the Castello di Carrù is an imperial diploma issued by Henry II in 1041. The documented history of the castle therefore reaches back to the 11th century. The Cappella di San Pietro, a Romanesque building, also dates from the 11th century.

The Romanesque Cappella di Santa Maria Maddalena stands at Preosa. A Roman inscription is set into its walls. The nearby Santuario di Sant’Anna comprises a sanctuary whose construction began in 1881 and which was completed and consecrated on 25 July 1882, as well as another sanctuary completed in the 1950s.

Bordino, Einaudi and Sacred Art

The Cappella di Bordino is located in the hamlet of Bordino in Carrù. It dates from the mid-18th century and has a single-nave, apsidal layout with pilasters and groin vaults. The local festival tradition includes the celebration of the Madonna della Neve, held every year on the first Sunday in August with a Holy Mass.

The Casa Nativa di Luigi Einaudi preserves characteristic historic architectural elements in the birth room: a sloping hipped-roof ceiling, a wooden floor, old window frames and a built-in wall cupboard. All six children of Lorenzo and Placida Einaudi were born in the house at Baluardo di Mezzogiorno 100 in Carrù.

Carrù’s parish church contains paintings by M. A. Milocco as well as an altarpiece depicting the Madonna del Rosario tra santi by Bartolomeo Guidobono. The Cinema Teatro F.lli Vacchetti originated from a chapel built in 1630 in honour of Saint Joseph. The Casa della Piemontese is the first museum established in Italy dedicated to a cattle breed and, after the Maison du Charolais in Charolles, the second in Europe.

Langhe Panorama in the Historic Centre

A visible connection with the landscape can be found in Carrù’s historic centre: the Panchina Gigante was inaugurated there on 4 May 2014. It faces the Langhe panorama and thus combines a visit to the town with a direct view of the surrounding landscape.

Getting There and Practical Information

For a train journey to Carrù, travelling via the Fossano or Bra railway stations followed by a bus connection is one possible option. On site, access to the Biblioteca Civica M. Dadone is available during opening hours.
