Frabosa Soprana: Karst Landscape, Churches and Hiking Trails

It is a new building replacing a 17th-century chapel and thus complements the religious heritage you can consider when exploring the individual districts.

The Ecomuseo di Case Ubè is designed as an educational workshop. Visitors can experience moments of chestnut gathering and drying there. The museum also presents life in the chestnut grove, the care of the groves, and the gathering and drying of chestnuts. It is directly accessible from the square in Fontane and is part of the decentralized ethnographic museum “La civiltà del Castagno”. Another cultural site is the Ecomuseo del Marmo in Frabosa Soprana. It preserves evidence of material culture and reconstructs traditional ways of life and work.

Karst Landscapes and Distinctive Rocks

The Grotta di Bossea is the final section of a large karst system on the watershed between Maudagna and Corsaglia. It lies between the Prato Nevoso basin and the Torrente Corsaglia, in the municipality of Frabosa Soprana at an elevation of 836 metres. Inside the cave, an underground stream forms rapids, waterfalls and clear lakes.

The landscape of the Grotta di Bossea is also diverse: it features very large chambers, high vertical walls, overhanging rock faces, extensive sharply sculpted ceilings, gorges, niches and huge fallen boulders. The Rocce di Costabella consist of quartzite blocks and are characterized by two rock towers. From Serro, they can be reached on foot via Via del Biale, a signposted route, a stone ford and a path through chestnut woodland.

Hiking and Winter Experiences

For hiking planning, nine routes in Frabosa Soprana are listed with information on walking times, length, difficulty and elevation gain. Trail No. 7 leads to Crevirola, a hamlet with restored houses and a rural chapel between Serro and Miroglio. At the same time, this trail runs above the historic Verzino quarry near Serro. Three hiking trails bear the name Giorgio Aimo. Stage 6A of the Sentiero Tanaro follows the Torrente Corsaglia through beech forests.

For winter sports, Frabosa Soprana's ski facilities are located in the districts of Mongrosso, Malanotte, Seggiovia and Monte Moro. Frabosa Soprana is connected to the Mondolè Ski resort by a link that can be used “on skis”. The Monte Moro single-chairlift was built.
