Limone Piemonte between the Maritime Alps, skiing and hiking trails

Limone Piemonte is located in the Maritime Alps on the border with France. The international tunnel at Colle di Tenda connects the town with the Ligurian Riviera and the French Riviera. It is also possible to travel by train: direct connections run to Cuneo and Ventimiglia.

Active between slopes and trails

The Riserva Bianca ski area has more than 80 kilometres of pistes, making it an important destination for winter sports in Limone Piemonte. Those who want to explore the mountains on foot will find well-maintained and clearly signposted hiking trails around Limone. They can be walked from spring through late autumn. The trails run across grassy slopes with gentle changes in elevation and varied panoramas.

For a walk with little change in elevation, the Via Romana is ideal. It connects Limone Piemonte with Limonetto and runs along the Torrente Vermenagna and beneath a tree-lined avenue. The “Lou Viasol” circular trail starts directly in Limone’s historic centre or in the hamlets and offers the opportunity to experience the unspoilt nature of the surrounding area.

More challenging is the Bec Valletta via ferrata. It is a moderately difficult via ferrata in the Vallone di S. Giovanni near Bec Valletta, with a difference in elevation of 380 metres. The starting point can be reached on foot from Limone’s town centre in about an hour. For mountain-bike tours, there is also the 23-kilometre Tour dei Forti Sabaudi, a spectacular panoramic circular route near Colle di Tenda on the border between Italy and France.

A new guide entitled “I Forti del Colle di Tenda” contains information on twelve suggested excursions. This adds an exploration of the historic structures there to the mountain-bike circuit at Colle di Tenda, without turning the two activities into a single route.

Ski history and historic sites

The Biblioteca e Museo dello Sci offers public access and guided museum tours. The Museo dello Sci commemorates Agostino Bottero, who is considered one of the first entrepreneurs in skiing in Limone Piemonte. Since the early decades of the 20th century, winter and summer tourism in Limone Piemonte has developed into the economic backbone of the town and the valley.

The historic surroundings also include the fortress complex at Colle di Tenda, which consists of six forts. The complex represents another aspect of the landscape around the pass: alongside sporting and panoramic experiences, you will also encounter military-historical structures here.

Festivals and regional music

The annual Festa dell'Abaiya is a traditional costume festival in Limone Piemonte. It commemorates the expulsion of the Saracens from the Vermenagna Valley. The procession of the Festa dell'Abaiya runs from the Chiesetta di San Secondo to Piazza del Municipio, combining a specific route through the town with the festive character of the event.

The Terrasole Festival provides a different cultural focus. It features concerts on a picturesque raft on Lago Terrasole and focuses on the region’s folk music. Together with the Museo dello Sci, the fortress complex and the Festa dell'Abaiya, this presents Limone Piemonte as a destination where mountain sports, local history and regional traditions stand side by side.
