Mombarcaro between history, trails and the Valle Belbo

Mombarcaro combines a historic townscape with trails through the Valle Belbo and a regional food culture that becomes particularly visible in mid-July. The town is known by the nickname “Vetta delle Langhe.”

Historic traces in the town centre

The lanes in Mombarcaro’s historic centre are paved with red bricks, giving the town a medieval character. Older features include the town gates, dated as the urban gates of the 12th century. The former parish church of San Pietro is a Romanesque ruin; the surrounding walls and the semicircular apse have been preserved. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo preserves frescoes that were removed from the San Pietro chapel.

Smaller religious buildings also add to the historic character. The Cappella di San Rocco dates from the 15th century. It houses the painting of the miracle of Santo Domingo, associated with pilgrims who passed through Mombarcaro before continuing their journey to Santiago de Compostela. Lunetta is a small hamlet of stone houses in Mombarcaro; the Santa Caterina chapel is located there. The Scala del cuc dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.

Museum and insights into the local past

The Museo storico houses a Roman stele from the 1st century AD. The museum also contains ethnographic objects from Mombarcaro and the surrounding towns. Visits are available by appointment on Sundays in June, July and August between 3 and 5 p.m. If you plan to visit this part of town, making an appointment in advance is therefore part of the museum visit.

Trails through the Valle Belbo

The Passeggiata della Valle Belbo leads from the Bragioli hamlet of Mombarcaro to San Benedetto Belbo. A Roman bridge has been preserved along this walk, and the ruins of an old mill can also be seen there.

Another connection is provided by GTL Stage 07: it begins at Piazza San Michele Arcangelo and leads to the Lunetta hamlet of Mombarcaro. From Lunetta, the stage continues along the Sentiero della Valle Tanaro.

Panoramas and regional specialities

Mombarcaro’s panoramic viewpoint on the Strada Romantica can be reached by car or on foot from the Belvedere car park at Piazza della Libertà.

The culinary side comes to the fore at the Sagra della patata dell’Alta Valle Belbo. There, producers’ stalls offer various potato varieties; traditional potato dishes are also prepared and offered for tasting. The Sagra is held every year in mid-July by the Pro Loco and the potato consortium. In this way, the festival creates a clear seasonal highlight for visitors who want to combine Mombarcaro with regional products and traditional preparations.
