Villanova Mondovì between Local History and Mountain Landscape

Historic Town Centre and Monte Calvario

Villanova Mondovì combines a historic area with churches, their furnishings and a mountain-dominated surrounding landscape. In the Villavecchia district, lanes and squares are located alongside the religious buildings. The Via Crucis and the Rete Sentieristica Villanovese run along Monte Calvario. The connection to the town thus extends from the square of the historic district to the paths on Monte Calvario.

From the main square of Villanova Mondovì, lanes lead uphill to the historic centre of Villavecchia and Piazza Santa Caterina. The route connects the main square with the hill and the older part of the town. The ancient Parrocchiale di Santa Caterina is located in the piazza of Villavecchia.

The Rete Sentieristica Villanovese runs across Monte Calvario and can be used on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. This provides three means of getting around for personal planning. The Via Crucis of Monte Calvario leads from Villavecchia up the mountain via 14 stations with fresco-painted pillars. The 14 stations structure the ascent from Villavecchia to Monte Calvario. The fresco-painted pillars accompany this religious route.

Churches, Organ and Piedmontese Architecture

The ancient Parrocchiale di Santa Caterina is the oldest building in the piazza of Villavecchia, formerly known as Piazza Maggiore. The Parrocchiale di San Lorenzo was built between 1820 and 1833 in the Neoclassical style, based on a design by the architect Silva. The two churches thus represent different construction periods within the historic area.

The furnishings of the Parrocchiale di San Lorenzo include an organ created in 1925 by Francesco Vegezzi-Bossi of Centallo. It has 1,580 pipes, 28 stops and a pedal with 30 notes.

The former Confraternita di Santa Croce is an example of Piedmontese Baroque architecture and a work by the architect Bernardo Vittone. The former Confraternita and San Lorenzo thus belong to different architectural styles.
