Monteu Roero amid Rocche, History and Wine

Monteu Roero showcases several facets of the Roero area: signposted themed circular routes, the landscape of the Rocche, historic buildings, and opportunities to discover the Roero DOCG wines. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between different focuses, including nature, culture, walks and wine.

Four Circular Routes through the Landscape

Monteu Roero has four signposted themed circular routes: the Sentiero della Castagna Granda, the Sentiero della Fossa dei Cinghiali and the Sentiero dei Fossili, all starting in the main town, as well as the Sentiero dell’Acqua, which starts in the hamlet of San Grato. The different starting points and themes already give each route its own character.

The Sentiero della Castagna Granda leads through typical Roero woodlands with Scots pines to a scenic ridge path. In clear weather, the view extends from the medieval castle of Monteu Roero to the historic town centres of other hilltop villages located on the Roero Rocche. Along this route stands a monumental chestnut tree estimated to be more than 400 years old, with a circumference of over 10 metres. In Monteu Roero, the S1 – Grande Sentiero del Roero passes through chestnut groves and along the ridges of the Rocche.

The Sentiero della Fossa dei Cinghiali leads through a damp valley floor in the Rocche, where pools of water form and fossil shells can be seen in the sandy valley floor. Shells and shell fragments, fossilised leaves or tree trunks, as well as rarer fish fossils, emerge from the sandy walls of the Rocche.

History and Buildings

The present-day parish church, Chiesa di San Nicolao, was built between 1858 and 1861 on the site of an older church. The Castle of Monteu Roero is a well-preserved medieval fortress and adds a clear historical dimension to the scenic impressions along the routes.

In the vicinity of Monteu Roero are Castello di Pralormo, a castle, Palazzo Traversa, a museum, as well as Palazzo Mathis and Palazzo Comunale, both palaces. The cultural offering in the surrounding area therefore ranges from medieval fortress architecture and museum visits to imposing palace buildings.

Wine and Other Regional Destinations

Farms producing the Roero DOCG wines offer cellar tours and wine tastings. BAJAJ also has a vineyard trail that can be explored by e-bike. In addition to the hiking routes, these activities provide another focus for a trip that combines the landscape with the region’s wine culture.

The wider area around Monteu Roero is home to Parco Cascina Vigna, a park, and Arco Charles Emmanuel I - Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy, a natural arch. Both destinations broaden the perspective beyond the immediate landscape of the Rocche.

More destinations: Corneliano D'alba, Torre Bormida, Lesegno, Limone Piemonte, Gallo, Cavaliggi, Neive, Garbelletto
