Discover Murazzano: Trails, Cheese and History
Murazzano can be discovered on several levels: through trails with clearly defined distances, through the distinctive Murazzano DOP cheese, and through historical traces in the townscape. This gives you a destination that appeals both to short explorations and to longer routes and excursions to cultural destinations in the wider regional area.
Trails with Different Paces
If you would like to compare routes by length and difficulty, the Cadazzo Pareta loop provides a clear point of reference: it is 11.4 km long, of medium difficulty, and starts in San Rocco. The Lovera Trail is shorter at 5.68 km. This easy and scenic out-and-back route begins at the windmill and leads through lavender fields. Both details help you plan your day around your preferred trail length without confusing the different routes.
Murazzano on Foot and in the Historic Town Centre
For exploring the town, the Murazzano Urban Trail starts and ends at Piazza Umberto I. On the way back, it passes through Porta Buzignano, crosses Piazza Cerrina and goes past the medieval tower. The restored walls along Via Conte Adami and Via Cristina Cerrina convey an impression of the town's former layout: they show what the former Ricetto may have looked like. The Murazzano stage of the Strada Romantica delle Langhe e del Roero is located in Parco della Torre in the historic town centre and can be reached on foot from the car park below.
Murazzano DOP and Local Food Culture
Murazzano DOP is a full-fat fresh cheese made from sheep's milk. It is produced either exclusively from sheep's milk or with a sheep's-milk content of at least 60 percent. Murazzano is a historic centre of Murazzano cheese production and trade. The Anduma e Tas-Tuma fair, held again in Murazzano in 2025, also focused on native animal husbandry, Murazzano DOP and outstanding gastronomic products. If you are planning an overnight stay in Murazzano, this allows you to combine your visit with town trails, history and regional cuisine.
Church, Windmill and Walls
The Santuario Beata Vergine di Hal dates from the first half of the 17th century and stands on the remains of the older church “S. Maria di Buzzignano extra muros”. The windmill was later converted for grinding wheat and remained in operation until 1630. Together with the restored walls on Via Conte Adami and Via Cristina Cerrina, these buildings reveal different layers of the town's history, while the walls expressly provide only an impression of what the former Ricetto may have looked like.
Routes and Destinations in the Wider Regional Area
There are also connections for a multi-stop trip: GTL Stage 08 connects Murazzano and Bossolasco via the ridge road of Passo della Bossola. The wider regional area around Murazzano also includes the Museo dei Cavatappi di Barolo as a museum, Castello Falletti di Barolo as a castle, Strada del Barolo e grandi vini di Langa as a museum and Museo Della Ceramica Di Mondovi' as a museum. These also include the Giardini del Belvedere as a garden, Bric Mindino and Monte Settepani as mountains, and Parco Europa as a park. This means that from Murazzano, in addition to the town's history, you can include museums, a castle, a garden, mountains and a park in your personal travel plans.
