In Valpone, the old church of San Defendente, located on the hill, was replaced by a new building dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Historical Traces in Valpone

Valpone’s history also extends beyond individual buildings. The historic settlement of Borghetto di Valpone was evacuated and resettled only three centuries later. Piero Bertone (“Rino”) was killed on 27 August 1944 during a Nazi-fascist raid in Valpone near Canale. His monument is located on Via San Defendente in the hamlet of Valpone. Borghetto di Valpone and Piero Bertone represent two different historical layers: the development of a settlement and a specific event in 1944.

Winegrowing and the Vineyard’s Distinctive Features

The Valpone vineyard faces entirely south. It is said to have a microclimate suitable for grape ripening; the soil contains a sandy component. The Barbero winegrowing company was established toward the end of the 19th century on a small farm in San Grato di Valpone, a hamlet of Canale. This combination of orientation, microclimate, soil and a company history dating back to the late 19th century gives winegrowing in Valpone a distinctive profile.

Geographical Orientation and the Loop Route

For geographical orientation, you can follow the Canale–Valpone loop route. In the hamlet of Valpone, it reaches the Canale–San Damiano provincial road. After reaching the hamlet, it turns right and then continues for approximately 800 metres along a shared cycle and pedestrian path. An Announced Spring Festival

A specific cultural event had been announced for Saturday, 9 May 2026, in the hamlet of Valpone in Canale: the first edition of Cantè Magg – Festa di primavera, a spring festival centred on fertility and the renewal of nature.
