Viola in Upper Val Mongia

Viola lies in upper Val Mongia, in a basin at the foot of Bric Mindino. The Mongia River rises at the foot of Monte Mindino and divides the town into two districts. Here, valley landscapes, mountain surroundings and a clearly structured settlement come together – a setting for days when you can combine the landscape with the history of the town.

Trails between Rock Tower and Panoramic Views

The trails around Viola offer different highlights. The route to Rocca dei Corvi reaches a rock tower around 90 metres high, known as La Sfinge. Viola also has a via ferrata to Rocca dei Corvi. Both destinations represent a landscape where striking rock formations and active pursuits belong together.

The route to Rocca dei Corvi begins in Viola S. Giorgio, follows the road to St. Gréé for about two kilometres and then continues along a track to the village of Crivella. Another route leads from the Madonna della Neve Chapel via a local unpaved road and then along a path to the village of Viola St. Gréé.

After about 200 metres, the marked B19 trail branches off from the paved road and climbs as an old mule track bordered by dry-stone walls through a chestnut grove. Continuing along the trail to the hilltop in the Pavesi area offers views across the Monregalese area and the Langhe. In Viola, this allows you to combine trail experiences, woodland sections and sweeping landscapes.

Sacred Places and Traces of History

The Santuario Madonna della Neve combines religious history with a visible image motif. It developed from a votive pillar that was converted into a larger religious building between 1630 and 1650. The Santuario Madonna della Neve contains a votive pillar with an image of the Madonna and Child.

Historical religious buildings can be found throughout the townscape. Independently of these, traces of an old fortress can still be seen in Borgo Castello. The Parrocchiale di San Giorgio was founded around 1190. The Chapel of San Giacomo has a double portico and dates from the 17th century. The Chapel of S. Lorenzo preserves two holy water stoups from the 14th century.

The characteristic scau-style buildings also contribute to the area’s distinctive local character. They were used for drying chestnuts. The connection between architectural forms, religious sites and traditional uses also makes Viola interesting for visitors who want to encounter not only landscapes on their walks, but also tangible evidence of the town’s history.
