Cavour amid Rocca, Culture and History
Rocky Ridge and Natural Environment
Cavour is defined by the Rocca di Cavour: the isolated rocky ridge rises to 462 metres above the Pinerolo plain. You can reach the summit on foot from the town in 15 to 20 minutes. This time estimate helps you place the ascent as a short activity of its own alongside the rest of your time at the Rocca. The return journey and breaks at the summit are not included in this walking time.
The Rocca’s plant life also makes this distinctive landscape feature interesting. Around 400 plant species have been recorded there, including some that are very rare in Piedmont. The Rocca di Cavour is also designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
Museum and Roman Heritage
At the Museo Caburrum, you encounter the history of the area on two levels. The museum displays archaeological finds from Cavour and explains prehistoric and historical human settlement on the Rocca and the surrounding plain. The archaeological finds thus extend beyond the Rocca to the surrounding plain. On the ground floor, one room is dedicated to the Roman municipium Forum Vibii Caburrum. The exhibits there range from early settlement to the local history of the Roman period.
The cultural heritage also includes Santa Maria Abbey, an important Benedictine monument of the High Romanesque period in Rocca di Cavour Nature Park. Its Landolfian crypt houses the oldest altar in Piedmont. The complex also includes a permanent exhibition of paintings by the artist Maria Magnano, who was born in Cavour. The Itinerario Naturalistico follows the road along the Rocca to Santa Maria Abbey. For route planning, the sequence from the rocky ridge to the abbey is the key consideration.
History in Specific Buildings
Historical events in Cavour are tied to specific buildings. The Peace of Cavour was signed in 1561 at Casa Savoia/Racconigi, also known as Casa degli Acaia. It recognised the physical existence of the Waldensians and established the boundaries of the area in which they were allowed to live and preach. The peace therefore relates to both local and religious history.
The Ala Comunale also combines architectural history with public life. It was built in 1583 and bears the designations “alla pubblica”, “bancaria del mercato” and “tettoia per il mercato dei cereali”. In the 18th century, it was known as “Pietra della raggione”; auctions, municipal consultations and public sales were held there. At the Ala, market and municipal affairs come together. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo has a distinctive wooden coffered ceiling with gilded rosettes.
Events Throughout the Year
Two local events are expressly associated with Cavour during the year. Cavour Carne di razza piemontese takes place every April, while Tuttomele is held every November. For seasonal planning, the relevant event month is therefore the key factor.
