San Domenico: Mountain Trails, Nature Park and Alpine Experiences

San Domenico is a hamlet of Varzo and lies at an elevation of 1,420 metres. The route begins here, continues by cable car to Alpe Ciamporino at 1,936 metres and reaches the starting point of the actual hike there. This sequence makes San Domenico interesting for travel planning when you want to combine mountain trails, altitude and experiences in nature.

Paths between forests and mountain peaks

The hiking trail between San Domenico and Alpe Ciamporino runs through the forest. Several distinctive mountain peaks are located in the vicinity of San Domenico: Pizzo Valgrande, Pizzo Moro and Punta Valgrande. Pizzo Fne is another mountain peak in the surroundings of San Domenico. The landscape therefore extends from a forested section of trail to alpine summit destinations, without requiring you to connect the individual places into a single route.

Alpe Veglia and Nature Park

The route through Veglia-Devero Nature Park to Alpe Veglia includes a section of the “Sentiero dei Fiori”. Information boards explain the park’s flora there and make the plant life a visible part of the hiking experience. The marked F50 trail leads from Alpe Ciamporino to Balma, the entrance to Alpe Veglia. This clear sequence is particularly helpful for your planning if you want to distinguish between a forest trail, a marked access route and a nature-focused path.

Activities for different interests

Sando Bike Park has eight downhill trails with varying levels of difficulty. For cycling enthusiasts, this means that the focus is not just on a single descent, but on a selection of trails at different levels. The specific number of trails and their graded difficulty levels are therefore important points of reference when considering San Domenico from a sporting perspective.

Sando Parco Avventura is located in a larch forest and has high-rope courses at various heights. The elements include vines, Tibetan bridges, zip lines, nets and walkways. Sando Parco Avventura also uses a continuous safety cable system.

Culture and regional connections

In the wider regional surroundings of San Domenico lies Gmeinalp, a ruin. The Church of Parrocchia Ss. Gervasio E Protasio and the Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine del Rosario are also located in this wider regional area. These destinations complement the nature and activity themes with historical and religious sites that you can take into account when exploring the region further.

San Domenico was the destination of a stage of the women’s Giro d’Italia in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2019.
