Uta combines sacred buildings, early history, Sardinian festival traditions and nature-based experiences. The town thus offers various ways to discover Sardinia: you can explore churches and archaeological traces, experience a traditional procession or take in the landscape around Monte Arcosu.
Churches and Historical Traces
Just outside Uta stands the Romanesque church of Santa Maria, surrounded by an ancient cemetery area. For people with reduced mobility, it has a ramp at the side entrance. On 8 September, the local population celebrates Santa Maria with an important religious and civic festival.
Santa Giusta also represents the town’s architectural history: the church was built in the 16th century in the Catalan Gothic style. The first building of the Church of San Nicola is said to date back to the year 525; it is considered an early Christian church dedicated to Sanctus Nicolaus. Another historical trace leads to Su Niu de su Pilloni, a late Neolithic archaeological site in Uta. It contains circularly arranged structures, possibly huts, together with an imposing surrounding wall.
Forests, Protected Areas and Trails
The Oasi di Monte Arcosu lies within the Special Area of Conservation ITB041105 and, at the same time, within the Special Protection Area ZPS ITB044009. Both protected areas extend across the municipalities of Uta, Assemini and Siliqua. Part of Monte Arcosu’s nearly 4,000 hectares of forests and maquis lies in the municipality of Uta. Among other species, Sardinian deer and fallow deer can be found there. Monte Arcosu is not accessible by public transport, which you should take into account when planning your mobility.
A specific connection from Uta into the surrounding landscape is provided by Route 211, “From Uta towards Monte Arcosu, Arcu S’Arena”. It begins in the Sa Spindula valley in Uta and reaches the Su Sciobeddadroxiu waterfall. This single-drop waterfall plunges approximately 40 metres.
Within Uta, the Parcu S’Olivà riu town park provides a different setting. It is an olive grove more than one hundred years old that belonged to the Serra family. The Church of Santa Lucia is located on the Cagliari–Santadi provincial road, which runs through the Gutturu Mannu forest.
Festivals, Music and Regional Specialities
Celebrations take place in the Oasi di San Nicola during the last week of June. The programme includes Holy Mass, light music and folklore performances, as well as polyphonic choirs. During the celebration of Santa Lucia, the approximately ten-kilometre route is accompanied by a procession of worshippers and festively decorated carts drawn by horses and oxen. The Pro Loco Uta folklore group also performs the “Ballu Sardu”, the dance characteristic of the town.
In mid-December, the Fiera delle Attività produttive del territorio at Parco di piazza s’Olivariu offers an opportunity to discover the specialities of the surrounding area.
