Discover Villaperuccio: Archaeology and Landscape

The area of Villaperuccio comprises an alluvial plain in the south and a semicircle of hills of volcanic origin in the north. If you would like to get to know the town through its landscape and prehistory, different forms and eras meet here. Archaeological sites include a prehistoric village, necropolises and individual menhirs; in the surrounding area, museums, a cave, a beach and historical sites complete the picture.

Montessu and the Necropolises

The Montessu Archaeological Park includes a necropolis with Domus de Janas, a megalithic burial corridor and the remains of two nuraghi. The Montessu necropolis comprises 35 Domus de Janas arranged in four different burial groups.

The Marchiana necropolis is also one of Villaperuccio’s significant archaeological areas. The prehistoric village of S’Arriorgiu is connected to the Montessu necropolis. This creates a thematic focus on settlement, burial and the early history of the landscape.

Menhirs near Terrazzu and Monte Narcao

The Terrazzu menhir bears the name “Luxia Arrabiosa”. It is located on a plot of land adjoining Via Santa Lucia on the western edge of the settlement of Terrazzu; Terrazzu lies slightly south of the town of Villaperuccio. Despite a tip damaged by lightning, this menhir is the largest and most impressive menhir.

The Menhir di Monte Narcao displays a different form. It is approximately six metres high and has a pointed-arch-shaped cross-section with rounded corners.

Museums, Cave and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The Parco degli Angeli zoo is located in the surrounding area of Villaperuccio. The Museo di Paleontologia e Speleologia “E. A. Martel” is also located nearby.

The Grotte di Is zuddas cave, the Museo del Carbone museum and Spiaggia di Porto Botte beach are also located in the surrounding area of Villaperuccio. Mount Monte sa Mirra is also nearby. Historical sites in the surrounding area include Nuraghe Barussa.

The Wider Regional Area

The ancient site of Parco Archeologico Monte Sirai is located in the wider regional area of Villaperuccio. In addition, a celebration is held at a rural church in Villaperuccio in July.
