Macomer: Archaeology, Crafts and Ancient Building Forms

Macomer is best understood through its material traces: monuments, archaeological sites, a museum and churches represent different periods and forms. The Nuraghe Craba is a single-tower monument with a rectangular lintel, a circular chamber and two side niches. Its clearly structured design makes it a specific destination for anyone interested in the architecture of the nuraghi.

From the municipality of Macomer, the Nuraghe Craba can be reached via Viale Gramsci; the route is approximately 7.7 km long. The approach then continues along the SP 43 for a further 8.2 km, and the nuraghe is on the right-hand side. These two approximate distances help you plan this visit as a separate excursion and maintain your bearings along the way.

Tamuli and Traces of Early History

The archaeological site of Tamuli also brings together several distinctive elements. It includes three giants' tombs and a nuraghe. From Macomer, the route follows Corso Umberto I to the junction with Via Lussu. It then continues in a northwesterly direction along the SC Monte; after approximately 4 km, the site is signposted on the right-hand side.

Among the area's notable finds is the Venere di Macomer. The 14-centimetre-high figurine is made of basalt and was found in 1949 in a cave in the Marras area, in the gorge of the Rio S’Adde. At Sa Tanca de Melchiorre, a section of Roman road paving has also been preserved. The Filigosa necropolis comprises four Domus de Janas carved into limestone and gave the Filigosa-Abealzu culture its name. Anyone interested in early settlement traces, rock architecture and historic routes will find several different ways here to explore Macomer's past.

Museum, Churches and Living Traditions

The Le Arti Antiche Museum is divided into 14 rooms and contains around 3,000 original objects from the 18th to the 20th century. Educational workshops are also held, allowing children and young people to try out traditional tools such as small table looms. For families, this aspect offers an engaging introduction to craft traditions, while the collection also spans a broad period of time.

The townscape also features religious buildings with clearly identifiable historical characteristics. The parish church of San Pantaleo dates from 1635 and has three naves as well as a portal with a pediment. Its bell tower was created by Michele Puig in 1573. The church of Nostra Signora d’Itria is considered a surviving Byzantine trace in Macomer. The church of Vergine del Soccorso is also considered a surviving Byzantine trace. In this way, individual architectural forms, dates and religious testimonies combine to create a varied cultural tour.

Rio S’Adde and Monte Sant’Antonio

In addition to its architectural and archaeological sites, Macomer also has a distinctive landscape character. The houses lie along the banks of the Rio S’Adde at just under 600 metres above sea level; in winter, they may be covered in snow. Centuries-old oak trees grow on Monte Sant’Antonio. These two landscape features give your travel planning a natural rhythm: you can combine cultural destinations with views of the river area, elevation and stands of old trees. If you are planning accommodation in Macomer, the different focal points help you structure your days consciously between exploring the town, archaeology and the landscape.
