Abbasanta: Nuraghi, Churches and Nature
Accommodation in Abbasanta
Abbasanta Between Nuraghi and Local History
Abbasanta combines impressive evidence of the Nuragic period with churches, a historic town center and opportunities for outings in nature. In the historic center, traditional houses made of dark volcanic stone or basalt shape the townscape. The parish church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria dates back to a building erected in the 16th century in the Gothic-Catalan style, which was built over the remains of a nuraghe. Sant’Amada (Dorotea), a church built in the 16th century in the Gothic-Aragonese style, is also located in Abbasanta. Santa Maria delle Grazie is another church dating from the 17th century.
Nuraghi and Archaeological Sites
The nuraghi are a major focus for anyone interested in the island’s early history and architecture. Nuraghe Zuras is a single-tower monument dating from between the 14th and 12th centuries BC, known for the precise workmanship of its carefully shaped basalt blocks. Nuraghe Aiga has a different architectural form: the multi-lobed monument has three side towers and a central mastio, and is surrounded by the remains of a large village. Nuraghe Losa is a complex, three-lobed basalt nuraghe structure with chambers featuring ogival vaults.
Bronze Age sites are also part of Abbasanta’s archaeological heritage. The well sanctuary of Calegastea is one of the archaeological sites in the Abbasanta area. The Bronze Age Tomb of the Giants of Sos Ozzastros is another. Those who want to explore historical places not only through individual architectural forms but also through different functions will find a well sanctuary, burial site, traces of a village and monumental nuraghi brought together within a shared theme.
Museum, Park and Spring
The META Museum presents rural and agro-pastoral life from the 19th century through the early 1950s. It thus complements the stone monuments with an insight into rural ways of life. For a more tranquil experience, there are the approximately four-hectare Parco di S. Agostino and the Bonorchis spring. The park offers opportunities for walks among cork oaks and downy oaks in spring and summer, as well as outings in nature. At Bonorchis, there is a small picnic area beneath the oak trees. The spring can be reached by car via the road to Santu Lussurgiu, 9 km from Abbasanta, and via the turnoff at Tanca Regia.
Local Flavors and Planned Equestrian Activities
Abbasanta is associated with Casizolu, a typical cow’s-milk cheese and Slow Food Presidium. This specialty adds a culinary dimension to a journey through churches, nuraghi and landscapes. Equestrian and breeding activities in the disciplines of endurance, dressage, eventing and show jumping are planned for 2026 at Tanca Regia. For your planning, this focus in 2026 is particularly interesting if you would like to combine cultural and nature-related themes with equestrian sports.
Which Interests Should Shape Your Stay?
You can organize your trip to Abbasanta by theme: historic buildings and archaeological sites are one central focus, while the park and spring offer other ways to enjoy the outdoors. The META Museum turns attention to rural and agro-pastoral life, while Casizolu highlights the local specialty. When choosing your accommodation, this distinction can help you define your personal focus without mixing up the town’s different facets. For your planning, also check whether the activities scheduled for 2026 at Tanca Regia fit your travel period and interests.
