Nurachi: Wetlands, Adobe Bricks and Sardinian Culture
Accommodation in Nurachi
Nurachi combines a landscape shaped by wetlands with a history of architecture and settlement reflected in its churches, adobe brick houses and local craft traditions. The area features numerous ponds, lagoons and marshes that form a distinctive wetland ecosystem. It extends onto the Sinis Peninsula and lies within the Parco Naturale del Sinis-Montiferru. If you would like to combine nature observation and cultural history in your travel plans, you will find a range of specific points of interest here.
Churches and Historical Traces
At the centre of Nurachi stands the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, a building dating from the 17th century. It was built over an existing Romanesque chapel from the 6th century. The older building beneath the church had a single-nave, apsidal layout and two rooms on either side of the presbytery. A necropolis with various burial forms from the 6th and 7th centuries AD surrounds the church.
Adobe Bricks Shape the Townscape
The historic centre of Nurachi is characterised by Campidanese houses built from air-dried adobe bricks, known as ladiri. The traditional manor house of Nurachi was also arranged around a courtyard completely enclosed by adobe brick walls; a courtyard at the back was usually used as a vegetable garden. Traditional building culture also includes the production of air-dried adobe bricks, known as ladrini. This technique once shaped the local architecture and has been gaining importance again in recent years.
Music and Lagoon Traditions
The Museo Peppetto Pau is housed in an old manor house made of adobe bricks and dressed stone. In an interactive application, visitors can tune and play the launeddas virtually. The local tradition also includes the long-established production and use of fassoni, reed boats used by lagoon fishermen. Musical heritage and the boat tradition associated with the lagoons thus emerge side by side in the townscape and local traditions.
Wetlands and Birdwatching
The Oasi Naturalistica di Pischeredda is an especially valuable natural area in the Nurachi region. The Nurachi area is recognised as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and designated as a Special Protection Area under the Birds Directive 79/409/EEC. The Nurachi Wetland Park has nature trails and observation points for birdwatching.
Orientation on the West Coast
Nurachi can be reached from Sardinia’s main arrival points via the SS 131 to Oristano and then along the SS 292 for approximately 10 kilometres. The SS 292 Nord Occidentale Sarda runs through the Nurachi area. On Sardinia’s west coast, this important state road leads from Oristano to Alghero and onward to the beaches of the Sinis Peninsula and the forests of Montiferru. For your travel planning, these road connections help you situate Nurachi geographically between Oristano, Alghero, Sinis and Montiferru.
A Festival Tradition Handed Down Through the Generations
The local tradition of the Sant’Agostino festival includes a running procession from Nurachi to S. Giovanni di Sinis.
