Tramatza: Churches, Wine Trails and Local Traditions

Tramatza combines sacred art, traces of different eras, a fertile landscape and a deeply rooted food culture. The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, Salvatore and Geminiano was consecrated in 1388. Its sacristy contains a sarcophagus from the period of the Judicatures, decorated with reliefs depicting a winged putto, two angels and coats of arms.

Church and Roman Bridge

The history of Tramatza also includes the Roman bridge, which dates from the late Republican or early Imperial period. Its dating is deliberately left open between these two eras.

The two churches and the bridge offer different focal points: here, the sacred space, relief art and sarcophagus take centre stage; there, the early Roman past.

Landscape Between Plain and Watercourses

Tramatza lies on a fertile alluvial plain where basaltic rocks come to the surface. The Cispiri River runs through the town. These two features shape the immediate landscape in different ways: the plain points to fertile soils, while the river forms a visible watercourse through Tramatza.

The Vernaccia Wine Trails offer a combination of landscape, winegrowing and movement. They pass through the municipalities of Nurachi, Tramatza and Zeddiani. Along unpaved roads and paths, they provide opportunities for walks and bike rides. This allows you to choose a route theme for your day that includes not only the town itself but also the neighbouring municipalities.

The Vernaccia Wine Trails run alongside the protected Oasis area between the Rio Cispiri and the Stagno di Mare Foghe.

Bread, Wine and Festive Sweets

Famiglia Orro offers the practical “Su Pani Pintau” workshop on making small traditional bread figures.

The sweets prepared for festivals and ceremonies in Tramatza include amaretti, bianchini, gueffus, pardulas and sospiri. Traditional dishes from Tramatza also include chicken and rabbit with Vernaccia.

Practical Orientation on Site

The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, Salvatore and Geminiano can be accessed from the provincial road running through the town centre and has a step-free entrance from the same road.

The Church of San Giovanni can be accessed via Vicolo Vittorio Veneto and has a step-free entrance from there.
