Alcara Li Fusi between Sacred History and the Nebrodi Landscape

Alcara Li Fusi lies on the slopes of the Nebrodi Mountains. Here, sacred history, medieval town structures, local crafts and a landscape of forests, rock formations and hiking destinations come together.

Sacred History and Local Culture

The Chiesa del Rosario dates back to the Norman period, more precisely to 1163. Its exterior features a characteristic portico and battlements. The Monastero delle Vergini Benedettine was built in 1559. In the Museo di Arte sacra, the exhibition covers approximately 350 square metres, two levels and several sections.

The Chiesa Maria SS. Assunta dates back to the Byzantine era and preserves the body of San Nicolò Politi in a secured shrine. The Santuario dell’Eremo di San Nicolò Politi lies about 2.5 kilometres from the town centre and includes the cave where the patron saint of Alcara lived until his death.

In the historic Motta quarter, medieval lanes preserve a character reminiscent of typical Arab neighbourhoods. Below Castello Turio stands the Fontana Abate, which is fed by seven large water jets. Local craft traditions include carpets called “pizzare”, made from white cotton yarn and pieces of fabric in various colours, carefully cut into strips.

Festivals and Living Traditions

For 2026, the Festa del Muzzuni has been announced for 24 June. Characteristic altars are decorated with braided carpets, wheat ears, carnations and lavender. Traditional polyphonic songs passed down orally accompany the entire festival night. From 10 p.m., music and folklore groups move through the lanes, while locals and visitors take part in the symbolic rite of comparatico.

Landscape and Nature Experiences

Lago Maulazzo is an artificial reservoir covering approximately five hectares at the north-eastern foot of Monte Soro, nestled in the beech forest of Sollazzo Verde. Above the inhabited area rises Rocca Traora, a limestone formation. It is considered a preferred habitat of griffon vultures in Sicily.

Grotta del Lauro can be reached via a trail suitable for experienced hikers and is accessible only with an accompanying guide. Inside are large stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other limestone formations.

In the Area del Grifone, a guided route begins at the Centro Escursionistico of the Nebrodi Park. There, griffon vultures can be observed in flight; the area also contains an aviary belonging to the reintroduction project.

The Agrifoglio hiking trail begins in the Militello Rosmarino area at Località Fontanazze, passes through the Contrade Agrifoglio, Faitedda and Palettone, and reaches Lago Maulazzo in the Alcara Li Fusi area.
