Geraci Siculo Amid Historic Traces and Trails
Geraci Siculo combines historical sites with trails and viewpoints. The Ventimiglia Path begins at the Castello di Geraci Siculo and ends at the Chiesa dell'Annunziata. The Geraci Siculo–Castelbuono section of the Via dei Frati also follows a clear route: it leads from Piazza del Popolo to the Bevaio della Trinità and then continues to the rural chapel of San Cosimano. The two routes therefore lead to historic buildings and religious destinations.
Castle Ruins, Bevaio and Rural Culture
The Castello dei Ventimiglia features ruins with bevelled tower corners, embrasures and a Moorish window. There are also arches belonging to underground passageways, as well as empty or rubble-filled cisterns. The Bevaio della SS. TrinitĂ offers a different insight into the history of the town: the rectangular structure is 20 metres long and has two side fountains made of hewn stone. It was commissioned by Marchese Simone Ventimiglia.
The MUSeBArch is housed in the 17th-century monastery of the Capuchin Fathers. It presents the local agro-pastoral and artisanal culture through reconstructed work processes and depictions of popular and religious festivals. The museum also includes reconstructed living spaces of shepherds and a wax death mask with its associated plaster cast from the 19th century.
Churches and Sacred Art
The Chiesa di Santa Maria La Porta was built in 1496. Its single-nave floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross. Inside is a painted marble polyptych from the 16th century, attributed to Giuliano Mancino and his workshop as well as Antonio Vanella. The Chiesa di San Giuliano is attached to the Benedictine convent; it also has a single nave and is decorated with ornamental stucco work by Francesco Alaimo from 1749.
The Museo di Arte Sacra can be accessed through the sacristy of the Chiesa Madre. From there, you enter the crypt, where the church treasury is displayed. The Chiesa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano, a very old chapel, also stands in the San Cusimano area. Its age is indicated by the pointed-arch portal.
Nature Trails and Viewpoints
The La via dell'acqua nature trail includes visits to the Marcati, wetlands and oligomineral springs. The protected area includes the ZSC Querceti sempreverdi di Geraci Siculo e Castelbuono. The Punto panoramico di Piazza S. Antonino offers a broad view of Geraci Siculo and the wooded area of the Madonie.
At the Salto del Ventimiglia, the view extends across Geraci Siculo's eastern valley to the slopes of Mount Etna. There is a steel-and-glass walkway extending approximately three metres beyond the edge of the wall. The Salto del Ventimiglia viewpoint includes an information centre on the ground floor of the adjacent municipal library, with a multimedia station and artistic terracotta reliefs depicting the history of the town.
For an accompanied exploration, the municipality of Geraci Siculo offers free guided tours of nature trails as well as art-historical and monumental routes, subject to prior reservation through its tourism service and the “Qui Parco” office.
Religious and Medieval Festivals
The patronal festival in honour of San Bartolomeo is celebrated every year on 24 August. It includes a procession of San Bartolo and San Giacomo through Geraci Siculo. The festival in honour of Maria SS. Annunziata traditionally takes place on the second Sunday in July; during it, the Annunciation painting is carried in a procession through the historic centre.
The traditional festival of the SS. Crocifisso takes place on 3 May and venerates a wooden statue in the Chiesa di Santa Maria La Porta. During the procession, worshippers take turns carrying the statue on their shoulders. Some worshippers walk barefoot, while children wear crowns made of woven branches and shout “PANI E PARADISU, MISERICORDIA SIGNURI”.
The Giostra dei Ventimiglia takes place every year during the first week of August as a historical-medieval reenactment. It includes processions in 14th-century costumes, knightly games, a simulated falcon hunt, medieval cuisine, music, medieval scenes, performances featuring high-quality horses and cultural gatherings. Another local event is A Carvaccata di Vistiamara, which takes place annually on a smaller scale. It includes a religious ceremony, music and singing, as well as tastings of dairy products made exclusively by the participating shepherds.
