Lana on the Adige: Discover Culture, Trails and Nature

Lana on the Adige combines sacred buildings, trails through cultural landscapes and distinctive natural sites. Between chestnut groves, vineyards and apple orchards are the Brandis Waalweg trail, the Gaul Gorge and the Lana Sculpture Walk Trail; in winter, the Gaul ice rink adds to the local offerings.

Churches and Architectural History

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is a significant Late Gothic sacred building in South Tyrol. It can be visited as part of guided tours; group tours can be booked on request. The Schnatterpeck Altarpiece is over 14 metres high, comprises 33 figures and is considered the largest winged altar in the Alps. A visit therefore focuses on both the Late Gothic sacred building and the large winged altar.

The Church of St Margaret in Niederlana can also be visited as part of guided tours. Visiting hours may vary depending on the season and organisational circumstances. When planning a church visit, this seasonal flexibility should be taken into account alongside the guided tour. Schloss Braunsberg provides a different historical accent: it was built in the early 13th century, is privately owned and is not open to visitors.

Walk Between Lana and Niederlana

The Brandis Waalweg trail connects Lana and Niederlana on an easy walk. The route is approximately 2.5 kilometres long, has only 30 metres of elevation gain and takes around 50 minutes. The approximate duration, distance and elevation gain can be taken into account when planning the day. Its approximate duration provides a clear framework for planning the day.

The Brandis Waalweg trail passes through chestnut groves, vineyards and apple orchards and offers views of Lana and the surrounding valley landscape. The Brandis Waterfall is the destination at the end of the Brandis Waalweg trail. For art enthusiasts, the Lana Sculpture Walk Trail adds another option: there, hikers can experience how artists from around the world have interpreted the landscape along the route. The route thus combines a specific landscape with a range of artistic interpretations.

Gaul Gorge and Nature Trails

The Gaul Gorge is just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Lana, at the foot of the castle hill of Schloss Braunsberg. From Gaulwiese, a well-secured path leads across suspension bridges and past a waterfall, continuing into the Gaul Gorge. Here, the proximity to the centre connects with a path through the gorge and across suspension bridges.

Winter Ice Skating and Car-Free Trails

During the winter months, from the end of October to the beginning of March, the Gaul ice rink offers ice skating on artificial ice. The seasonal limitation is therefore part of planning a stay that includes ice skating. Access to the Gaul ice rink has been designed to be largely barrier-free. For a winter stay, the period from the end of October to the beginning of March is therefore decisive. When planning the day at the ice rink, both the season and access should be taken into account.

The Church of St Vigilius am Joch can only be reached on foot via hiking trails, as the entire Vigiljoch area is car-free. The walk should therefore be factored into the schedule as the access route to the church.
