St. Leonhard in Passeier: History, Trails and Experiences

St. Leonhard in Passeier combines Tyrolean history with trails along the Passer and a variety of opportunities for an active stay. The MuseumPasseier in San Leonardo in Passiria is dedicated to freedom fighter Andreas Hofer and presents Tyrolean history, particularly the 1809 uprising. Jaufenburg Castle and French Military Cemetery

Jaufenburg Castle in St. Leonhard is open on Mondays from 10:00 to 13:00. Its fourth floor contains Renaissance paintings created by Bartlme Dill Riemenschneider in 1538. The French Military Cemetery in St. Leonhard is connected with a violent confrontation in November 1809, during which 22 rebels from Passeier were killed; on the French side, 200 soldiers and 30 officers were reported dead.

Later traces are also part of this historic site: in 1959, a local rifle company installed a marble plaque at the French Military Cemetery. Excavations in 2013 uncovered a knife as well as bone remains and items of clothing that indicate the presence of a corresponding grave.

Trails along the Passer and through the gorge

Several trails start directly at prominent points in St. Leonhard. The Norggensteig begins at Sandhof and follows Trail No. 30 along the Passer to the Auer Bridge. Its forest section features illustrated legends, play stations and a picnic area in a small clearing. The Andreas Hofer Circular Trail begins at the tourist office in St. Leonhard, leads to the historically significant Sandhof and returns to the starting point via the Gandellenweg Trail No. 3A or the Passerweg Trail No. 30.

The Passerschlucht Trail begins at the village bridge in St. Leonhard and leads over bridges and footbridges along the river into the Passer Gorge. Those who prefer to explore the surroundings on two wheels can take the Merano–St. Leonhard in Passeiertal cycle path, an easy cycling tour on an unspoilt route. The route is approximately 20 km long and has an elevation difference of around 370 m.

Climbing, Swimming and Fishing

The SportArena Passeier climbing facility is located in Gänsboden in St. Leonhard Passeier. It has 400 m² of climbing area, a 16 m-high wall and 101 routes ranging from difficulty level 3a to 8a. The maximum route length is 19 m.

The St. Leonhard outdoor leisure pool offers a water slide, a waterfall, a current pool, two children's pools, water massages, floor bubblers and water loungers. In the recreational area with the Sandwirt fishing pond, access is free for locals and guests. Fishing is possible at the Sandwirt fishing pond without a state fishing licence.
