Partschins between Waterfall, History and Wine Culture

Partschins combines impressive natural experiences with an unusually tangible local history. Nature at the Waterfall and in Texel Group Nature Park

On its 8 km course through the steep and untouched Ziel Valley, the Partschins Waterfall is fed by numerous tributary streams and rivulets. You can reach it by bus route 265, on foot from Partschins in about an hour, or by car as far as the Birkenwald car park. For the ascent into the mountain world, the Texel Cableway takes visitors directly to the Merano High Mountain Trail in the heart of Texel Group Nature Park.

Family Trails with Stories and Apple Culture

The Partschins Legends Trail is a family trail from Partschins to prehistoric ritual sites. The route follows the Legends Trail to Saltenstein and returns via the Zielbach stream, a suspension bridge and the Sonnenberg Trail. The Apple Walk offers another family-oriented experience: the apple adventure trail includes 12 stations, a quiz and a prize draw. This allows you to combine nature and local themes in a playful circular walk.

Typewriters, Church and Local History

The Peter Mitterhofer Typewriter Museum houses around 2,000 typewriters and presents more than 150 years of social and technological history, including the history of the Enigma cipher machine. Peter Mitterhofer lived in his house in Partschins for 31 years and developed six typewriter models there in his workshop, the first in 1864. The house has been documented since 1431 through the earliest written records.

The Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul also tells the story of the village’s long development. It was first mentioned in official documents in 1264 and rebuilt around 1502 in the late Gothic style. The church contains Jörg Lederer’s (died 1550) group of figures depicting the Death of the Virgin Mary, the only surviving element of the original late Gothic high altar. Peter Mitterhofer’s grave and commemorative plaque are located in the old cemetery on the east wall of the Parish Church of Partschins.

Wine, Fruit and Historic Manor Houses

At Ansitz Mairhof, wines are made from local grape varieties including Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Lagrein Rosé, Schiava, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt. The wines can be sampled in the historic cellar on request. Sun-ripened fruit from the estate’s own cultivation is also used to make apple juice, various jams, fruit and leaf syrups, as well as homemade chutneys, which are sold and offered for tasting.

At Ansitz Gaudententurm, Christine Schönweger demonstrates her distilling skills every week during the season at the Gaudenz estate distillery. She then invites visitors to sample her fine spirits in the historic cellar; the inner courtyard can also be visited.
