Avio between Castello, Enantio and Monte Baldo
Accommodation in Avio
Avio combines the wine-making tradition of Vallagarina with historic buildings and a mountain landscape on Monte Baldo. Those planning a trip featuring culture, regional specialities and challenging trails will find very different themes in a compact area: medieval frescoes, a sword from the Late Bronze Age, wine tastings, and routes through forests, meadows and alpine landscapes.

History between castle, church and antiquarium
Castello di Avio comprises a keep from the 11th century, five towers, a baronial palace and walls from the 13th century. In the Sala delle Guardie, it preserves a 14th-century fresco cycle depicting battle scenes. The Camera di Amore is also decorated with 14th-century frescoes. They portray a medieval world of ladies and knights and address courtly love and the art of war.
At the foot of Monte Baldo stands the Antica Pieve di Avio, a Romanesque church with frescoes from the Venetian school dating from the late 13th century. The depictions show Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and the baptism of Jesus. The Antiquarium di Avio offers a much older historical reference: it displays a sword from the Late Bronze Age that was found in 2021 near the ridge of Monte Baldo at Malga Acquenere, within the municipality of Avio. It is dated to approximately 1350 to 1000 BC.
The Antiquarium comunale is located in Avio’s historic centre in the Casa del Vicario. Visiting the Casa del Vicario requires registration by email at least five days in advance. This specific requirement should therefore be included in your planning if you would like to combine a visit to the historic centre with a museum visit.
Wine and events in the historic centre
Avio is known for producing Enantio, an indigenous wine from Vallagarina with a history of more than a hundred years. Uva e dintorni offers tastings of local products in the historic centre along a gastronomic tour. Uva e dintorni also organises markets and medieval camps, as well as re-enactments of historic games, battles and crafts.
The events programme also includes the “Città del Vino” Palio. It comprises four competitions involving barrels, skittles and grape stomping through to filling the barrel. At Azienda Agricola Vallarom, you can take part in a guided tour of the winery and the surrounding landscape, including a tasting of three still wines by the glass with bread. The estate also offers a tasting of four still wines by the glass with local products, its own honey and bread.
Hiking trails and mountain tours
The Giro delle Malghe comprises three circular hiking trails on Monte Baldo within the municipality of Avio. Over short sections, they also pass through the neighbouring province of Verona. The trails run through centuries-old beech forests and grazed meadows, showing hikers local mountain pastures and bivouacs. The routes also pass historic boundary stones dating from 1754.
Another connection between landscape and historic routes is offered by Section 11 of the Perimetro del Trentino from Avio to Torbole. It follows an old mule track into the valley crossed by the Aviana stream. For a considerably more challenging mountain tour, there is the Ferrata Gerardo Sega near Avio. It has a total elevation gain of approximately 900 metres, takes around six hours in total and is classified as difficult.
Avio is also associated with a specific cycling route: the 73.6-kilometre Mori–Avio–San Valentino circular route leads from Avio through the Valle dei Molini towards San Valentino. The different details concerning circular hiking trails, a long cycling circuit and the difficult via ferrata help you organise your day according to length, terrain and personal ability.
