Coastline with Unusual Landscapes

Porto Azzurro combines distinctive coastal scenery with religious buildings, fortress history and local traditions. Terranera Beach is a particularly striking place where the shape of the coast and its connection to mining come together directly.

Terranera Beach is a narrow pebble beach that separates a small green lake of mineral origin from the open sea. The beach is also characterized by darkish sand. Hematite particles make the sand sparkle and are associated with nearby mineral and iron ore deposits. Barbarossa Beach lies in a small south-facing bay. Both Barbarossa and Terranera are suitable for underwater activities. This means there are two distinct types of coastline to choose from: Barbarossa as a south-facing bay and Terranera as a narrow stretch between lake and sea.

Hiking and Mining History

The Percorso del Santuario di Monserrato starts in Porto Azzurro and is described as a challenging four-hour hike. For planning the day, the four hours form a fixed time block; the classification as challenging is also an independent piece of information about the route. The starting point in Porto Azzurro and the four-hour duration provide concrete parameters for planning this hiking day. The hike can therefore be planned as a standalone activity.

Another facet of the region's history is represented by La Piccola Miniera e Museo Minerario Etrusco. The site contains a faithful reconstruction of a hematite mining site and welcomes visitors by prior reservation. The reconstruction refers to a hematite mining site, while at Terranera Beach, hematite particles make the sand sparkle.

Fortress, Sanctuaries and Squares

The Fortezza di San Giacomo is also known as Fortezza di Longone and was built in 1603 by Don Garcia de Toledo. Its bastions and star-shaped layout reflect a structure modeled on the fortress of Antwerp. Madonna del Monserrato is a Marian sanctuary in Porto Azzurro dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine dates from the 18th century. The Cappella del Sacro Cuore di Maria also dates from the 18th century. Piazza Matteotti is located by the sea; it serves as a venue for cultural events and entertainment.

Festivals and Culinary Specialties

The Festa della Madonna di Monserrato is celebrated in Porto Azzurro every year on September 8. The Festa del Pescatore takes place on July 25, featuring religious rituals, food stalls in the town's streets and fireworks in the bay. For planning the timing of a stay, July 25 and September 8 mark two specific dates in the town's calendar.

Schiaccia briaca is part of the culinary selection in Porto Azzurro's pastry shops and at the town's traditional festivals. Porto Azzurro also has a sheltered landing place where ferries and tourist boats can dock.
