Marciana: Fortress, Museums and Monte Capanne

Marciana is a hilltop settlement located at an altitude of 375 metres above sea level on the slopes of Monte Capanne. To this day, the town preserves an architectural character typical of a medieval village: houses built closely together almost resemble defensive walls, while numerous granite-paved lanes run between them. Landscape, townscape and history are closely intertwined here, giving your travel plans a clearly recognisable cultural and mountain-oriented focus.

Fortress, Churches and Museums

One of the most prominent historical sites is the Fortezza Pisana. The Republic of Pisa built it in the 12th century; in the 15th century, it was modified with four bastions featuring arrowhead-shaped masonry. From the upper bastions, the rampart walk offers views stretching from Marciana Marina across Enfola and Portoferraio, with Piombino and Monte Capanne in the background.

The Museo Civico Archeologico di Marciana was the first museum institution on Elba and provides a historical overview from the Palaeolithic to the 18th century. It is located in a room of the town’s former Praetorian Palace. On the ground floor of the Palazzo Appiani is the Museo Didattico Numismatico della Zecca, in the “ZECCA” area. The numismatic exhibition established there displays a collection of coins minted in the Principality of Piombino between the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Caterina was built in the 16th century on the site of an older chapel dedicated to Santa Maria, which was incorporated into the new building. The Pieve di San Lorenzo is located on the SP 34, the so-called “civillina” road, approximately halfway between Marciana and Poggio. In Marciana, the Casa del Parco offers educational exhibitions on the area’s terrestrial and marine flora and fauna.

Trails to Monte Capanne

If you would like to explore Monte Capanne on foot, Sentiero Elba No. 101 leads from Marciana to the summit. The trail is 3.6 km long, the average walking time is 2 hours and 45 minutes, and the difficulty level is EE. It is considered the main and easiest route to the summit of Monte Capanne. Another option is the Marciana–Monte Capanne cable car: it reaches the vicinity of the summit in 18 minutes, while its valley station is located in Località Pozzatello in Marciana.

The Santuario della Madonna del Monte can be reached on foot from Marciana in around 30 minutes via the medieval, paved Via Pomontinca. The history of the Romitorio di San Cerbone is traced back to the 6th century; it was first mentioned in writing in 1421. From Marciana Alta, the hermitage can be reached via Trail No. 101 through chestnut woods and along lively streams.

Traditions around Marciana

The Settimana delle castagne is also part of the area’s cultural identity and is considered the sixth edition. It included traditional festivals such as the Festa d’Autunno in Marciana and the Castagnata in Poggio, as well as excursions, walks, music, theatre and cultural gatherings. In this way, Marciana combines historic sites, nature trails and local festival traditions, offering different ways to discover the town and its surroundings.
