Marciana Marina Between Coast and History

Marciana Marina combines a diverse coastal landscape with historical traces and maritime traditions. Beaches with crystal-clear water, rocks sloping down towards the Tyrrhenian Sea and lush Mediterranean vegetation define the character of the town. The few-kilometre-long coastline includes pebble beaches, town beaches and a single sandy beach, created only recently, within the harbour area.

A prominent testimony to the past is the Torre degli Appiani. It was built as a defensive and observation structure to protect and monitor the bay and is a 16th-century bastion for observation. The most widespread interpretation dates its construction to the years 1558 to 1562 under Jacopo VI Appiano. This makes the tower particularly suitable for visitors who want to discover historical connections while staying on the coast.

On the Lungomare stands the Chiesa di Santa Chiara, an 18th-century church. Il Cotone, the oldest settlement in Marciana Marina, is also closely linked to the town’s history. The first houses were built in the 16th century on the cliff that protected the harbour. Il Cotone developed from a fishing village and has preserved its original maritime character.

Beaches and Water Experiences

Spiaggia della Fenicia is the beach closest to Marciana Marina and is considered suitable for children. Spiaggia della Fenicetta is more secluded; it is reached via a concrete path between the rocks. Those looking for a quieter coastal landscape will find Spiaggia della Crocetta, a wild cove surrounded by largely untouched nature.

Spiaggia della Cala is a quiet beach near Marciana Marina that is relatively difficult to find and reach. Especially when compared with the more readily identifiable types of beach along the short coastline, it becomes clear how different the individual coves are. The old harbour of Marciana Marina is also a destination for sailing enthusiasts. The town is also a starting point for dives: several headlands reachable from the harbour within a few minutes provide access to diving areas.

Film, Festivals and Local Cuisine

Marciana Marina served as a filming location for the television series I delitti del BarLume. In the series, the seafront promenade of Marciana Marina serves as the setting for the fictional coastal town of Pineta. Another historical connection lies in tuna fishing: historically, one of the last two tuna-fishing stations still operating on Elba was active along the coast of Marciana Marina.

Regional cuisine is also part of the town’s character. Typical bakeries in Marciana Marina continue to bake Gallette. These are essential for preparing Panzanella, a typical summer dish of the island of Elba. Schiaccia briaca is traditionally paired with Aleatico, the wine of the island of Elba.

La Tagliagambe took place in June as a cycling and running competition. On 11 and 12 August, Marciana Marina celebrated the patronal festival of Saint Chiara with religious ceremonies, processions on land and water, fireworks and concerts in the square.
