Pomonte: GTE trails, coast and cultural details of the village

Pomonte can be explored through three clearly distinct aspects: the GTE hiking trails, the coast with the Elviscot wreck, and specific details found in the village squares.

Hiking trails between Pomonte and Vallebuia: GTE, loop trail and stage

The southern branch of the GTE leads from Cavo to Pomonte after 47 kilometers and a walking time of 19 hours and 30 minutes. These figures refer to the route from Cavo to Pomonte and not to the individual stage from Poggio to Pomonte. The route from Cavo and the stage from Poggio therefore represent different route references for a hike around Pomonte.

The Percorso della Valle di Pomonte loop trail runs through the Valle di Pomonte. After a short section of the GTE Sud, it follows trail no. 109 and leads to the watershed with Vallebuia. The loop trail therefore alternates between the two specific trail names GTE Sud and trail no. 109.

The GTE stage from Poggio to Pomonte is 9.26 kilometers long and takes an average of approximately 4 hours and 40 minutes. It follows the ridge separating the Valle di Pomonte from Vallebuia. The average time of approximately 4 hours and 40 minutes refers to this individual stage; the longer route from Cavo is separate from it. When choosing a trail in Pomonte, there is therefore a choice between a loop through the Valle di Pomonte and an individual stage across the ridge.

On the southern GTE stage between Poggio and Pomonte, two Caprili can be seen in the Località Le Mure. The two Caprili are therefore located along the same stage route, which runs over the ridge between the Valle di Pomonte and Vallebuia.

Church, plateau and village squares in Pomonte

The Percorso di San Bartolomeo leads to a plateau near Monte di San Bartolomeo. The ruins of a Romanesque church of the same name are located there. The Percorso di San Bartolomeo thus provides a separate destination alongside the GTE sections through the Valle di Pomonte and over the ridge.

Pomonte itself also has specific village features: portraits of Napoleon’s wives can be seen across an entire square. The large Sedile is located in the Piazzetta del Calello. The two village features are situated in different squares within Pomonte.

Beach, clear water and the Elviscot off the coast

The first beach you can reach from the village of Pomonte consists of gravel and stones rounded smooth by the sea. The water there is particularly clear.

The rock known as Scoglio dell’Ogliera lies 200 meters offshore from the beach. Because of the Elviscot wreck on the seabed below it, it is a popular destination for divers and snorkelers. The rock, wreck and beach are directly connected at this stretch of coast. The distance from the beach to the rock is 200 meters.

The Elviscot wreck lies at a depth of 3 to 12 meters and is clearly visible. The depth specified therefore ranges from 3 to 12 meters.

From dell’Ogliera beach, the Elviscot wreck can be reached by scuba diving, swimming, canoe or pedal boat. The four options listed lead to the same wreck, but differ in how you travel from the beach. Access can therefore be by water or with a watercraft, depending on the chosen means of transportation.

From Pomonte, you can set out on foot or by bicycle into the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Pomonte is the starting point for both means of transport into the national park.

Getting to the western GTE starting points from Portoferraio

To reach the western starting points of the GTE, take the ferry to Portoferraio and from there a scheduled bus operated by Autolinee Toscane to Pomonte; the bus route is line 116. The journey consists first of the ferry to Portoferraio and then the bus to Pomonte.

Line 116 refers to the bus section to Pomonte and not to the ferry journey to Portoferraio. For the western GTE starting points, the ferry and bus should therefore be planned as consecutive sections.
