La Guardia on Elba: Coastal Paths, Cliffs and Island History

La Guardia combines distinctive coastal paths with the landscapes and local features around Patresi. Patresi lies on a promontory descending into the sea. The Via dell’Essenza leads to Patresi, runs near the Faro di Punta Polveraia lighthouse and continues to the sea.

Coastal landscape between cliffs and bay

The nearby Faro di Punta Polveraia lighthouse stands on the rocks of the cliff of the same name, 52 metres above the sea. The Spiaggia di Punta Polveraia beach is also nearby. It lies in a small bay enclosed by steep cliffs and is characterised by white pebbles. Here, the coast is defined by a distinctive lighthouse and a clearly enclosed beach area.

Paths through varied landscapes

The nearby Via dell’Essenza runs across abandoned dry-stone walls, old roads and mule tracks, as well as newer sections of road. Along the route between Patresi and Monte Capanne, the views extend from Capraia to Corsica. These varied sections of the route also make the area interesting for travellers who want to combine landscapes with historical traces.

Trails along the steep coast

The coastal path at La Guardia is part of the Via dell’Essenza via Sentiero No. 150. This Sentiero begins in La Guardia near Patresi and leads to Zanca, running directly along the steep coast above the sea. The short Sentiero per Punta Polveraia can be reached via the paved road leading from Patresi to the sea. You can therefore include the coastal path and the short path to Punta Polveraia separately in your daily itinerary.

History in the village centre

The nearby Chapel of Santa Lucia dates back to 1760. The village centre of La Guardia also has a long history of development: it remained almost unchanged for centuries until tourism began in the late 1950s. Active pursuits with local roots

Patresi is one of the endpoints of the Grande Traversata Elbana, a route connecting the eastern and western ends of Elba. On the “Le Vie dei Caprili” route, you reach the second and third Caprile by taking the GTE in the direction of Patresi. In the area around Patresi, trekking and cycling are possible on the paths of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Water sports such as canoeing, kayaking and snorkelling are also possible there. The range of activities therefore extends from paths in the national park to pursuits on the water.

The local food culture also has a specific connection to Patresi. The onions of Patresi are among the vegetable varieties preserved from extinction on Elba and are regarded as an example of the protection of agricultural biodiversity. Every year on 11 August, the Amici di Patresi e Colle d’Orano association organises a dinner at the Patresi landing stage. Agriculture and community life thus complement the area’s natural and walking-related attractions.
