Bibbona between the Medieval Borgo, Coast and Macchia
Bibbona between the Borgo, Coast and Nature
Bibbona combines a medieval historic centre with coastal landscapes, protected natural areas and regional everyday culture. In Il Borgo, narrow cobbled lanes and exposed-brick houses shape the townscape. As a result, history and architecture are not encountered only at individual sights, but directly in the town’s streets.
Historical Traces in the Townscape
The Pieve di Sant'Ilario already stood in Bibbona’s castle district in 1154. The Forte Cavalleggeri also points to the area’s coastal history: the fort dates from 1780 and was part of the defences protecting the coast of Marina di Bibbona from incursions by Saracens and pirates. The Mulino del Cardellino is an old windmill on a hill. It remained in operation until the beginning of the 20th century and was restored in 1967.
Macchia, Animals and Coastal Dunes
The Macchia della Magona belongs to Tuscany’s regional agricultural and forestry estate and covers approximately 1,636 hectares. Among other species, it provides a habitat for wild boar, roe deer, fallow deer and foxes; migratory birds also stop there. For those interested in nature, the area combines expansive landscapes with concrete opportunities for observation, without tying the destination to a single type of holiday.
The Spiaggia di Marina di Bibbona features wide beaches with fine sand, characteristic tomboli with Mediterranean macchia and distinctive coastal dunes. The Pineta di Marina is part of the Riserva Naturale Tomboli di Cecina nature reserve. You can reach the Pineta di Marina via the La California exit of the SS1 Aurelia. Then follow the signs to Marina di Bibbona and take Via dei Cavalleggeri Nord as far as Camping Free Beach.
Regional Cuisine and Guided Visits
Near the Borgo of Bibbona, you can taste bruschetta with local extra virgin olive oil at olive mills. Bibbona also has a point of sale for products from the region, offered as produce from a short supply chain. The Grotte Gialle is a destination for guided visits in Bibbona and adds another way to get to know the town alongside its historical, scenic and culinary aspects.
The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans
When choosing your accommodation, you can first decide on your preferred focus: historic lanes and buildings, beaches and coastal dunes, pine forest and macchia, or regional products and guided visits. This makes it possible to choose a hotel or other accommodation in Bibbona to suit your personal pace of travel. This classification is particularly helpful if you want to decide in advance whether culture, nature, the coast or local cuisine should take up the most space in your days.
