Ancient Village with an Established Structure
Sant'Ilario is an ancient village that probably originated in the 7th century with a small number of modest houses. The village developed through successive rings of houses, which were protected by new entrance gates. When walking through Sant'Ilario, the sequence of the rows of houses and the entrance gates are therefore just as much in focus as individual historical points of interest.
Music, Fortress and Panoramic Views
Sant'Ilario is known as “Paese della Musica” and was the birthplace of operetta composer Giuseppe Pietri. The Piazza della Chiesa in Sant'Ilario is a historic concert venue for the Elba Isola Musicale d'Europa festival. For those interested in culture, local history and musical history come together here in a specific place. In Sant'Ilario, musical memory and the history of the fortified village are closely intertwined.
The Piazza della Chiesa lies within the ancient Pisan fortress and offers a view over the Gulf of Marina di Campo. On clear days, the view extends as far as the island of Montecristo.
Hiking through Forests and Mediterranean Scrub
The Sentiero Elba no. 119 begins in Sant'Ilario and ends at the GTE junction. Along its route, it passes through reforested woods and Mediterranean scrub dominated by Calicotome spinosa and Cistus monspeliensis. Sant'Ilario and the GTE junction mark the two endpoints of this trail. For hikers, the route connects the village area with the GTE junction while also leading through woodland and Mediterranean scrub on Elba.
A Gravel Route through Sant'Ilario
The gravel and MTB cycling tour “Elba: Paesi Campesi Gravel” runs from Marina di Campo beach to the hill villages of San Piero and Sant'Ilario. On leaving Sant'Ilario, the tour follows the gravel section along Via del Salicastro. There, the section is marked with the trail signs for routes 119, 121 and GTE of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. The route runs from the beach via San Piero and Sant'Ilario to the signposted gravel section on Via del Salicastro.
Cultural Attractions and Beaches in the Surrounding Area
The Museo Civico Archeologico e Fortezza Pisana is located near Sant'Ilario. The Museo Nazionale delle Residenze Napoleoniche dell'isola d'Elba and the Villa di San Martino are located in the area around Sant'Ilario. The Fortezza Pisana is also located nearby. The surrounding area brings together archaeological, fortress-related and Napoleonic themes.
Near Sant'Ilario are Spiaggia di Marina Di Campo, Spiaggia della Paolina, Spiaggia di Cavoli and Spiaggia di Procchio. The beaches complement the cultural attractions in the vicinity of Sant'Ilario.
