Piombino between Coast, Archaeology and Nature Trails
Piombino combines culture, coastal landscapes, nature and trails to offer different travel experiences. You can shape your plans around historical sites, archaeological traces, days at the beach, stargazing or walks through distinctive landscapes.
City History and Archaeological Traces
The Castello di Piombino has around eight centuries of history. Its original core is a square tower from the 13th century that served as the eastern city gate. In the historic center, the Museo archeologico del territorio di Populonia houses more than 2,000 archaeological artifacts. The co-cathedral of Sant’Antimo has a Renaissance cloister created by Andrea Guardi.
Coast between Beach, Dunes and Mediterranean Scrub
The Parco costiero della Sterpaia covers around 296 hectares. It includes 8 kilometers of beach, 124 hectares of dune and rear-dune areas, as well as 155 hectares of woodland and agricultural clearings. Calamoresca is a pebble cove framed by high cliffs and lush Mediterranean scrub; from there, you can enjoy views and sunsets over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Calamoresca is also a starting point for exploring the trails of the Piombino promontory and reaching secluded coves.
Trails to Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti
The Via del Ferro is a self-guided trail between Etruscan tumulus tombs and ancient structures associated with ironworking in the industrial district of Populonia. The Via della Romanella leads from the Via del Ferro to the remains of the ancient walls of Populonia. It continues through the forest along an old paved road, now partly hidden by vegetation, to the acropolis. The Via dei Cavalleggeri trail passes through Calamoresca, Spiaggia Lunga, Cala San Quirico and Buca delle Fate towards Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti.
Nature and Stargazing
Padule Orti Bottagone comprises the Orti brackish-water marsh and the Bottagone freshwater marsh. Both provide habitats for many animal and plant species, especially birds. The Parco di Punta Falcone is located in the municipality of Piombino and offers trails of naturalistic and historical interest. The astronomical observatory in the Parco di Punta Falcone hosts conferences and stargazing events.
Planning Beaches and Arrival
Piombino Marittima railway station is just a few steps from the ferry terminal for boats to the island of Elba. The park and beaches of Sterpaia can be reached via roads branching off the so-called Geodetica, the connecting road between Piombino and Riotorto. An extensive parking system enables regulated access to the numerous coastal beaches. The beaches of Salivoli offer swimming facilities and equipment for water sports. When choosing a hotel in Piombino, you can therefore set your personal priority: city history, coast, nature or trails.
