Zanca: Paths between Coast, Forest and Tradition

Zanca can be experienced from two perspectives: through its preserved traditional townscape and through paths leading into the coastal and natural landscape. In the western part of Zanca, many buildings have retained their historic structure and traditional use. An old chapel has been preserved as part of the area’s traditional architectural and landscape heritage. There are also walls along the roadside and small stables that still stand flush with the road. These details provide a tangible setting for walks and make the connection between built heritage and landscape accessible.

Hiking trails with different routes

Sentiero n. 113 connects La Zanca with the junction for Sentiero n. 103 near Marciana. It can also be used to access two circular hikes. Another option is the “Quattro passi tra mari e monti” hike – Itinerario n. 1. It leads from Capo Sant’Andrea up to La Zanca along an old mule track. The “Archeo Trek” – Itinerario n. 3 reaches the provincial road at La Zanca via Sentiero n. 13 and then follows an old mule track back to Capo Sant’Andrea. The different routes allow you to distinguish between circular hikes, connecting routes and paths that return to the starting area.

Coast, beaches and granite

150 runs along the entire coast to Marciana Marina and connects the surrounding beaches. The granite cliff “le Cote Piane” can also be reached in the area via a granite path created from the beach. Another footpath leads to the small beach of Cotoncello. In Zanca, the coast thus connects different hiking destinations: a longer route along the sea, a granite path to a cliff and a footpath to a small beach.

Forest and diving sites

From the La Zanca district, Sentiero n. 13 leads in about 30 minutes to a forest with centuries-old chestnut trees and other tall-growing trees. Experienced divers may be interested in dives near the partly submerged rocks known as “Formiche della Zanca”, west of Sant’Andrea. Zanca therefore appeals both to people who want to combine forest and coast while hiking and to experienced divers for whom a special place in the sea is the main attraction.

Seasonal connection within the municipality

Within the municipality, the seasonal Marebus route operates from June to the end of August between Sant’Andrea, La Zanca, Patresi and Colle d’Orano, coordinated with the regular bus services. This provides a clearly defined period for planning your trip.
