Churches, the Castle Complex and Sacred Art

The Church of San Giusto has origins dating back to the 9th to 12th centuries. During the transition from the former episcopal seat of Populonia to the current episcopal seat of Massa Marittima, it assumed this ecclesiastical role. The Museum of Sacred Art of Suvereto is located in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo. The museum preserves 15th-century wooden sculptures depicting the announcing angel and the Annunciation of Mary, created by Lorenzo di Pietro (Vecchietta).

The cloister of San Francesco is also one of the noteworthy historic buildings. It is largely preserved in its entirety, has a square floor plan and features five arcades on each side. The Rocca Aldobrandesca forms part of Suvereto’s medieval castle complex and stands at its highest point on the northern side. The Museo Artistico della Bambola adds another cultural highlight, preserving more than fifty dolls.

Festivals with Historical Connections

During the medieval evenings, the streets are illuminated with torches and candles. Performers wear historical costumes, and a nighttime historical performance recalls the granting of the Charta Libertatis in 1201. The Sagra di Suvereto takes place every year between late November and early December and has been held for more than forty years. In addition to its historic buildings, Suvereto therefore offers clearly time-honoured occasions to experience the town and its history.

Trails for Different Day Plans

Sentiero 1 leads from Suvereto via Prata and back to Suvereto. The circular route is approximately 8.2 kilometres long, takes about two and a half hours and is considered moderately difficult. Sentiero 17, the Sentiero dei Vecchi Molini, is an easy 3.7-kilometre trail through the Valle dei Vecchi Molini. It passes six former water-powered mills and combines exercise with a glimpse into the landscape’s former use.

The Torrente Redigaffi continues to carry a moderate amount of water even in summer. Freshwater fish and crayfish can be seen in its waters. The Parco Naturale di Montioni is connected with the municipalities of Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, Piombino, Massa Marittima and Follonica. In the wider region around Suvereto, the Poggio Saracino route also begins in the Parco Naturale di Montioni near Montioni Nuovo. It passes visible buildings from the Napoleonic era as well as remnants of aluminium mining.

Suvereto’s tourist information office is located in the historic centre at Via Magenta 2 and is operated by Parchi Val di Cornia.
