Discover Artimino: Borgo, Villa and Wine

Church and Archaeology

At the Pieve di San Leonardo, the original Romanesque layout probably dates from the second half of the 10th century. The church stands 230 metres above sea level. The Pieve houses a polychrome terracotta group depicting the Visitation from the Della Robbia school. The Etruscan necropolis of Prato Rosello is characterised by tumulus-shaped tombs and dates from the late 8th to the 6th century BC.

Villa Medicea La Ferdinanda

Villa Medicea La Ferdinanda was commissioned by Ferdinando I as a residence for himself and his guests during the hunting seasons. He entrusted the design to court architect Bernardo Buontalenti; the building was completed between 1596 and 1600. In June 2013, the villa was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also known as the “Villa dei cento camini” because its roof is crowned with numerous chimneys, each differently designed.

Museum and Wine in Artimino

On 26 March 2011, the new premises of the Museo Archeologico di Artimino opened in the former wine-cellar rooms of the Fattoria di Artimino in the Borgo di Artimino. From 1 March to 31 October, the museum is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 09:30 to 13:30; on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:30 to 13:30 and from 15:00 to 18:00. From November to 28 February, it is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:30 to 13:30 and from 14:00 to 16:00. Openings can be arranged on request for groups of 15 or more.

Guided tastings of Artimino’s own wines are available by prior reservation. This culinary perspective complements the historical and archaeological highlights.
