Vaiano between Calvana, Hiking Trails and Monastic Culture

Vaiano can be discovered through its trails, landscape and multifaceted historical heritage. This makes it a destination where hikes on the Calvana, cycling along the Bisenzio, villa culture, monastic history and local confectionery traditions coexist. Hiking along historic routes

On the side of the Calvana facing Vaiano, there are around 20 kilometres of marked hiking trails along the main routes. These include the ridge trail and paths starting from the village of Sofignano. The Via della Lana e della Seta opens up a broader perspective: this 130-kilometre route connects Bologna and Prato via existing hiking trails in six full-day stages.

The Via delle Rocche also combines landscape and history in a special way. It follows old medieval paths along the slopes and can be divided into stages. The section relating to Vaiano leads to Villa del Mulinaccio, the Badia di San Salvatore a Vaiano and the Torre di Melagrana. In this way, natural experiences and historical points of interest come together within the same hiking perspective, without this implying that they form a single complex or a unified circular route.

Cycling and protected landscapes

For a bicycle ride, the cycle path between Vaiano and Prato is a good option. It runs along the left bank of the Bisenzio for 11.5 kilometres through green surroundings, stretching from Vaiano to Gamberame. The landscape also includes the park of Villa del Mulinaccio, with its collection of monumental trees. The villa has an orchard with old fruit varieties, while the park lies within the protected area known as the Area Naturale Protetta del Monteferrato.

Villa, Badia and a museum tour

Villa del Mulinaccio bears traces of both architectural history and personal biography. Cosimo Sassetti built its oldest section between the late 15th and early 16th centuries on an existing building. Filippo Sassetti lived at Villa del Mulinaccio during his childhood and youth.

The Badia di San Salvatore a Vaiano belonged to a monastery founded between the 9th and 10th centuries by Cassinese Benedictine monks. The Museo della Badia is located in the former monastery next to the Badia di San Salvatore. The museum tour also includes the Church of San Salvatore and the cloister of the former monastery. In the former refectory, the museum displays finds documenting the monks’ everyday life.

The Museo della Badia di Vaiano is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m. Groups and school classes can visit by prior reservation. The Church of Santi Giusto e Clemente also houses a polychrome wooden crucifix from the 18th century.

Local festivals and confectionery traditions

The traditional Vaiano Carnival takes place in February with a parade of allegorical floats. Each year, five floats from the primary school classes and one from the middle school are intended to pass through the town. The everyday culinary culture of Vaiano and the entire Prato area includes a confectionery tradition passed down through generations. It includes, among other things, anise-flavoured Zuccherini and Sassi della Calvana.
