Renaissance art around the Villa Medicea

The Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano was designed by Giuliano da Sangallo for Lorenzo il Magnifico. As a Renaissance building, it combines classical principles, particularly those of Vitruvius, with elements of rural Tuscan architecture. It thus represents an architectural concept in which formal design and a connection to the Tuscan landscape come together.

The Sala di Leone X preserves almost in its entirety one of the most significant Tuscan fresco cycles of the 16th century. The cycle was created by Pontormo, Andrea del Sarto, Franciabigio and Alessandro Allori.

The Scuderie also complement the historical character of the complex. They were built around 1548 based on a design by Niccolò Tribolo. Part of the first upper floor was converted into the Museo Ardengo Soffici in 2009.

Churches and palaces in the surrounding area

Santa Maria del Rosario is the most important church in Poggio a Caiano. It was built in connection with the strong population growth in the 19th century; the present tower was inaugurated in 1938, based on a design by Ardengo Soffici. The church also houses the painting “The Coronation of the Virgin”, created around 1606 and attributed to Alessandro Allori.

The Church of San Francesco in Bonistallo stands in Poggio a Caiano on a hill with extensive panoramic views. The Fiorelli Palace, the Geppi Naldini Palace and the Palazzo Pretorio are located in the surroundings of Poggio A Caiano; all three are palaces. The Castello di Calenzano, a castle, is also located in the surrounding area.

Festivals, music and a clearly defined route

Assedio alla Villa originated around the Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano and the Mascherone as the Festa del Vino and developed year after year into a historical Rievocazione, that is, a historical reenactment. Poggio A Caiano is also the venue for the Festival delle Colline of contemporary music, which began in 1976 as Giugno Poggese.

For orientation in the area, the Via Medicea Fiorentina offers a clearly described route: it leads downhill from Bonistallo to the centre of Poggio a Caiano and to the Villa Medici and its park.

The Parco delle Cascine di Tavola is located in the immediate surroundings of Poggio A Caiano. The Parco Sandro Pertini and I Fornelli, a hill, are also located nearby. La Cupola, a peak, lies in the wider regional surroundings.
