Discover Vernio: Mountains, History and Festa della Polenta

Vernio combines a predominantly mountainous landscape with striking historical and cultural sites. Streams, dense vegetation and wooded districts characterize the area. Its districts lie along a wide bend in the Bisenzio River; at the same time, Vernio is crossed by the Apennine watershed. Nature, history and local tradition thus come together in a diverse destination.

Mountain Landscape and Trails

In the immediate vicinity of Vernio are the summit of Poggio Mezzana and the mountains Monte Tronale, Monte Coroncina and Monte Bucciana. In the wider region are Borgo della Rocca, a castle complex, and Castello Villa Smilea, a castle. The ruins of Badia A Taona and the Badia di San Salvatore di Vaiano monastery are also located near Vernio.

The Via delle Rocche is approximately 40 kilometers long, features around 2,000 meters of elevation gain, follows medieval hillside paths and connects, among other places, the Rocca di Vernio. This makes it a clear focus for your travel plans if you are interested in historic routes and a pronounced mountain landscape.

Rocca, Art and Mills

The Rocca di Vernio was the seat of the fiefdom of Vernio. It was initially owned by the Counts Alberti and, from the 14th century onward, by the Bardi, well-known Florentine merchants. The Rocca can be reached via a convenient road branching off from the village of Sasseta. It is privately owned; to visit it, you must make arrangements with the owners.

In Montepiano, Prato del Sole and the mill's geometric garden comprise a lawn surrounded by trees. At its center stands the enameled metal sculpture “Sole,” donated by Bruno Saetti. Saetti had chosen Montepiano as his place to live and work.

The MUMAT museum also offers workshops for schools and guided tours. The ancient Meucci Mill dates back to the late 18th century. It is located near the confluence of the Fiumenta and Bisenzio rivers and beside a Mercatale, a place of trade and exchange.

Festa della Polenta and Regional Impressions

The Festa della Polenta brings a distinctive culinary and traditional element to San Quirico in Vernio. It takes place every year on the first Sunday of Lent and celebrates sweet polenta made from chestnut flour. The Festa also includes a historical parade, performances by historical groups and stalls selling traditionally handcrafted arts and crafts.

Vernio can therefore be explored according to different interests: through elevations, waterways and forests, through history and art, or through a local festival tradition. The highlights are spread across Vernio, Montepiano, San Quirico in Vernio and the surrounding area.
