Cantagallo: Hiking, Forests and Culture

Cantagallo particularly appeals to travelers who want to combine experiences in nature with regional history and art. The municipality offers multi-day and one-day hiking opportunities, protected woodland landscapes, a visitor center, and places with a distinctive cultural character. This makes it a destination whose character can be experienced in different ways depending on the pace of travel you prefer.

Hiking at Different Paces

The Via delle Fonti e dei Mulini di Cantagallo is a seven-day route along CAI trails and runs almost entirely within the municipality of Cantagallo. If you are planning several days of hiking, this provides a clear indication of the time required without limiting your stay to a single day trip.

The route can also be completed as individual circular stages, each of which can be walked in a day. This allows you to choose between a longer sequence of stages and individual circular walks, without reducing the route to just one way of traveling.

Another option is the Sentiero delle Sorgenti del Bisenzio, a circular hiking trail that can be completed in one day; Luogomano is recommended as the starting and finishing point. The trail passes the buildings of Vespaio and delle Barbe and offers several rest areas with tables and benches. There are also fences, steps, and complete signage with hiking, place-name, and historical information about the surrounding area.

For orientation, the cammINatura project, created in 2020 by the Comune di Cantagallo, provides an easy-to-use map featuring points of interest and recommended walking routes within the municipality. You can view the map via Google Maps on desktop and mobile devices without installing an additional app.

Forests and Nature in the Municipality

The Acquerino-Cantagallo Provincial Nature Reserve is characterized by extensive beech forests, chestnut groves, conifer plantations, and mixed forests. It is also home to the centuries-old Faggione di Luogomano beech tree, whose crown covers an area of approximately 600 m².

The Riserva Acquerino Cantagallo visitor center is located in the town. It provides information and assistance with organizing hikes.

Culture Between Textile History and a Fortress

The Museo Materia presents the history and development of the textile sector in the Bisenzio Valley and Prato through ecological, historical, artistic, and technological content.

Rocca di Cerbaia is a fortification in the municipality of Cantagallo whose origins probably date back to the 12th century. It was part of a defensive system used to guard the road toward Lombardy and was the residence of the noblewoman Cunizza da Romano. According to a local legend, Dante Alighieri was turned away there on a cold night in 1285 while seeking shelter.

Luicciana, a small hamlet of Cantagallo, has become an open-air museum and a contemporary art complex.
